The Indian Air Force (IAF) is considering the acquisition of Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) Air-Launched Long-Range Artillery (Air LORA) ballistic missile system, which promises enhanced precision strike capability against fortified, high-value targets from stand-off ranges, according to defence sources.

The move comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, which reportedly highlighted gaps in India’s long-range air strike options and accelerated the IAF’s push toward next-generation missile systems. Reports suggest that the growing interest builds upon an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between IAI and India’s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in 2023, aimed at promoting joint development and indigenous production of advanced air defence technologies.

The Air LORA system is designed to deliver rapid, pinpoint strikes on command-and-control facilities, strategic airbases, naval assets, and critical infrastructure up to 430 kilometres away. Notably, it allows for dynamic target updates and boasts a minimum engagement range of 90 kilometres, enabling flexible mission planning in real-time.

Described by IAI as a “revolutionary advancement” in air-to-ground systems, the missile operates at supersonic speeds and features blast fragmentation or deep penetration warhead options. The system is fully autonomous post-launch and can be integrated with existing aircraft either as a stand-alone weapon or via onboard avionics.

Air LORA’s survivability in complex and contested environments is strengthened by advanced inertial navigation systems (INS), GPS guidance, and robust anti-jamming capabilities. Its steep attack angles and high velocity allow it to bypass conventional air defences and ensure mission success even in poor weather conditions.

BEL has stated that its partnership with IAI aims to not only fulfill Indian military needs but also promote broader participation of domestic industries in advanced missile technology development.

If finalised, this deal would further cement Indo-Israeli defence collaboration and boost India’s growing reputation as a precision-strike capable power in the Indo-Pacific.
