Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, visited the 61st Cavalry Regiment in Jaipur today to formally assume his appointment as the 25th Colonel of the Regiment. The occasion highlighted the historic and operational significance of one of the world’s last remaining horse-mounted cavalry units, which was formed in 1953 from the amalgamation of various princely state forces.
During his visit, Lt Gen Seth reviewed the regiment’s operational preparedness and commended its legacy, ceremonial excellence, and contribution to national pride. Stationed in Jaipur, the 61st Cavalry not only maintains traditional mounted duties but also plays a key role in advancing equestrian sports in India. The unit has been instrumental in grooming top-level riders, including contributing to Anush Agarwalla’s historic Olympic debut in dressage on July 31, 2024.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy with deep expertise in armored warfare, Lt Gen Seth praised the regiment’s dedication to valour, discipline, and professionalism. His visit included a ceremonial salute, inspection of training facilities, and interactions with the troops, reinforcing their commitment to both tradition and modern operational demands.
