Three personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed and several others injured after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Kadwa area of Udhampur district on Thursday morning.
The tragic incident took place around 10:30 am when the CRPF team was returning from an operational deployment in Basantgarh. The vehicle, part of a convoy, was navigating a narrow stretch of the hilly Kandva–Basantgarh road when it lost control and fell into the gorge.
Police teams and local residents swiftly launched a rescue operation, evacuating the injured to a nearby hospital. Medical teams are currently attending to the wounded, some of whom are reported to be in critical condition.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed his concern on social media platform X, writing, “Disturbing to receive the news of a road accident involving a CRPF vehicle in the Kandva–Basantgarh area. I have just now spoken to DC Ms. Saloni Rai, who is personally monitoring the situation. Rescue measures have been initiated immediately. Locals have voluntarily come forward to assist. All possible help being ensured.”
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also offered his condolences. “Saddened by the loss of CRPF personnel due to an accident near Udhampur. We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Directed senior officials to ensure best possible care and assistance,” the LG’s office posted on X.
The cause of the accident is being investigated. The incident has once again highlighted the risks security forces face not only during combat but also while operating in treacherous terrains.
Authorities have assured that all necessary support will be extended to the families of the deceased and the injured personnel.
