In a unique moment for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Group Captain Omar Browne and Squadron Leader Mihir Vivek Chaudhari — both sons of former IAF Chiefs — have been conferred the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). The honorees are the sons of Air Chief Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne (Retd) and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari (Retd), respectively, marking a rare instance where military valor runs through generations.
IAF historical data reveals that since 1960, only about 5% of gallantry awards have gone to the children of senior officers, underscoring the rarity of this year’s honors.

While the double honor has sparked public discussion about meritocracy versus nepotism in the armed forces, a 2022 Ministry of Defence report reaffirmed the fairness of the officer selection process via the NDA and CDS exams. Notably, fewer than 2% of officer cadets have familial military ties, indicating that these latest awards are the product of personal merit and rigorous professional training.
Instituted in 1960 and refined in 1994, the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) recognizes exceptional courage in the air. This year’s recipients embody that spirit — proving that while military legacy may be inherited, valor must be earned.
