International issues and events July 2013

  1. Egypt unrest: -Egypt’s army forcibly removed its president, Mohammed Morsi, he is from Muslim Brotherhood party, just after his removal chief justice Adly Mansour took as head of interim government. And ex finance minister hazam el -beblawi was appointed interim prime minister. This happened due to rising unemployment, social and economic woes and lack of social and economic reforms. Since then unrest is continuous in Egypt between pro and anti morsi protesters.
  2. Bangladesh convicts ex jamat chief:-ex islamist chief Gulam Azad was given 90year jail term for crimes against humanity in Bangladesh’s independence war of 1971.One more top leader mohammad mujahid was given death penalty.
  3. Bhutan polls new govt:-Bhutan’s main opposition PDP(people’s democratic party) stormed into power by defeating ruling DPT ,now PDP chief Tshering Tobgay is p.m. of Bhutan. It was second poll after introduction of democracy in 2008.
  4. China’s Ex-Minister sentenced to death for Graft and Power Misuse:-China’s former Railways Minister Liu Zhijun on 7 July 2013 was given a suspended death sentence for corruption and abuse of power.
  5. Prince Philippe sworn in as the Seventh king of Belgium:-Prince Philippe was sworn-in as the new king of Belgium on 21 July 2013 after the abdication of his father Albert II due to his age and health.
  6. Mamnoon Hussain defeated Wajihuddin Ahmed to be the President of Pakistan:-Mamnoon Hussain was elected as the 12th President of Pakistan on 30 July 2013. 73-year old Mamnoon Hussain belonged to the PML-N Party.
  7. Douglas Engelbart, Father of the Mouse died at the Age of 88:-Douglas Engelbart, the U.S. inventor who was known as the father of the computer mouse died on 3 July 2013 at age of 88.
  8. Sri Lanka banned film Flying Fish claimed it Insulted Government and Security Forces:-Movie, Flying Fish was banned by the Govt. of Sri Lanka from being screened. The film was launched in 2011 and has won international recognition.
  9. Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange launched political party in Australia:-42 Year old Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on 25 July 2013 officially launched his political party to contest Australian elections this year. As per Assange, his party which he named Wikileaks Party would be fielding seven candidates including Assange for upper house Senate seats in the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.
  10. New Prince of Britain, the Royal Baby, Named George Alexander Louis:-His Royal Highness, the new Prince of Britain, also called the Royal Baby was named George Alexander Louis on 24 July 2013.
  11. Afghanistan’s first and only woman governor:- (MANILA, Philippines based award) Afghanistan’s first and only female governor and a humanitarian worker from Myanmar’s Kachin minority are among this year’s recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards, often regarded as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize.
  12. Edward Snowden awarded with German ‘whistleblower prize’ 2013 :- The whistleblower prize is awarded once in two years to honour persons, who “expose in public interest grave social injustices and dangerous developments for individuals and the society, democracy, peace and environment“.
