Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, remembered for his defence service and iconic acting roles, passed away on August 18 at the age of 91 in Thane. His funeral will be held today in the city.
Potdar’s life was a remarkable blend of discipline and artistry. After graduating in economics in 1961, he briefly worked as a professor before joining the Indian Army through an emergency commission after the 1962 war. Serving until 1967, he retired as a Captain from the Army Services Corps. He later worked with Indian Oil Corporation, continuing a professional life defined by integrity and dedication.
At the age of 44, Potdar entered the world of cinema—a late but transformative step. Over the next four decades, he featured in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films and nearly 100 television serials.
His most memorable screen appearances include films like 3 Idiots—where his “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho” dialogue became iconic—along with Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Parineeta, Tezaab, Rangeela, Vaastav, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator. On television, he won hearts with roles in Wagle Ki Duniya, Bharat Ki Khoj, Majha Hoshil Na, and Mrs. Tendulkar.
Colleagues and fans recall Potdar for his warmth, humility, and comic timing, qualities rooted in his soldierly discipline and teacher’s empathy.
Potdar’s dual legacy—as a defender of the nation and a versatile actor—continues to inspire generations. From serving the country in uniform to entertaining millions on screen, he embodied a rare blend of service and creativity.
