The Indian Army’s Agniveer recruitment rally at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium in Ferozepur on August 22 witnessed an overwhelming response from local youth, reaffirming Punjab’s long-standing martial tradition.
Lt Gen Ajay Chandpuria, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Vajra Corps, reviewed the rally and lauded the enthusiasm and determination of the young aspirants eager to serve the nation under the Agniveer scheme.
The Agniveer scheme, introduced in 2022, offers a four-year tenure in the armed forces and has emerged as a significant avenue of employment. A 2023 Observer Research Foundation study found that nearly 46% of applicants come from families with no prior military background, underlining its role in widening access to defence careers.
The rally comes at a time when India faces heightened security challenges, particularly along the 3,500-kilometer border with China. Defence spending has risen accordingly, with a 2024 Rand Corporation report noting that India now allocates 3.5% of its GDP to military modernization.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium, once known for its rich hockey legacy and as a training ground for icons like Major Dhyan Chand, has in recent years been repurposed for military recruitment activities.
The massive turnout in Ferozepur underscores the growing interest among Punjab’s youth in military service, blending the state’s historical legacy with contemporary defence imperatives.
