The ‘Emerging Leaders Panel Discussion’ under the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS-2025) concluded successfully at the Southern Naval Command, Kochi, after two days of intensive deliberations from August 27 to 28. The event brought together young naval leaders from 19 member countries, providing a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and chart the future of maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Vice Admiral V Srinivas, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the Indian Navy’s commitment to fostering dialogue, trust, and cooperative security across the IOR.
The event featured four thematic sessions:
- Strategic Importance of the IOR and Challenges for Young Officers – Addressed issues such as maritime trade security, climate impact, and regional geopolitical dynamics, while encouraging innovative solutions from young leaders.
- Emerging Technologies in Maritime Security – Focused on AI-enabled systems, unmanned platforms, cyber threats, space-based surveillance, and advancements in maritime reconnaissance.
- Future Role of IONS in Fostering Collaboration – Emphasised interoperability, joint exercises, and professional exchanges to strengthen regional partnerships.
- Harnessing Training Capabilities Among IONS Countries – Discussed pooling resources, expanding training linkages, and developing common frameworks to enhance collective preparedness.
Beyond formal discussions, cultural and social engagements allowed participants to experience Kerala’s maritime heritage and build personal connections, enriching professional dialogue with informal exchange.
The panel concluded with a strong consensus on enhancing maritime domain awareness, technological collaboration, and shared training initiatives. Delegates reaffirmed IONS as a voluntary and inclusive forum dedicated to strengthening collective maritime security through cooperation and dialogue.
The Emerging Leaders Panel closed with all member nations renewing their commitment to work together for peace, prosperity, and security across the Indian Ocean Region.
