In a significant development for the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, Lt Gen RC Tiwari, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, extended his congratulations to Maj Gen Sanjay Maurya on assuming the prestigious role of Commandant at Command Hospital, Kolkata, today.
The ceremonial handover marks a new chapter for the hospital, a key tertiary care and teaching institution with a rich history dating back to 1870. Maj Gen Maurya, an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, brings extensive expertise in plastic and reconstructive surgery to his new position.
His academic and clinical contributions, including a notable 2019 study on the management of war wounds, highlight his specialization in addressing complex injuries. The study emphasized the challenges of delayed reconstruction due to initial prioritization of vital organ injuries, a critical factor in improving outcomes for military personnel.
Command Hospital, located in Alipore, evolved from a 60-bed British medical facility established near the Racecourse to its current state since 1968. It serves as a vital referral center, particularly for soldiers requiring advanced reconstructive care following trauma. Lt Gen Tiwari, who has led the Eastern Command since 2023, underscored the importance of Maurya’s appointment in enhancing the hospital’s capabilities.
The event, marked by a formal exchange of insignia, reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to maintaining high standards of medical care within its ranks, especially in the face of challenging wartime conditions.
