In a major push to strengthen the Indian Army’s technological and operational capabilities, Lieutenant General JS Sidana, AVSM, Director General of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and Senior Colonel Commandant, visited the 3 Electronics and Mechanical Engineers Centre in Bhopal on Tuesday.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy with 38 years of distinguished service, Lt Gen Sidana underscored the importance of innovation and adaptability in modern warfare. He praised the high standards of training and administration at the Centre, commending both soldiers and Agniveers for their professionalism.
Focus on Agnipath Scheme
During his interaction, the Army’s top EME officer engaged with Agniveers recruited under the 2022 Agnipath Scheme. The scheme provides 24 weeks of intensive training, after which only a select percentage of Agniveers are absorbed into the regular Army following their four-year tenure. Lt Gen Sidana said the initiative reflected the Army’s forward-looking, data-driven approach to manpower modernization.
Demonstrations of Advanced Technology
The visit also included a ceremonial wreath-laying and demonstrations of technical capabilities, including drone technology. These initiatives, aligned with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, have contributed to a 25% increase in indigenous defence technology adoption since 2020.
Corps of EME’s Evolving Role
Highlighting the Corps of EME’s journey from its early electrical focus in the 1980s to its present-day role as a leader in electronics and innovation, Lt Gen Sidana urged all ranks to continue upholding the Corps’ legacy of excellence.
The visit reaffirmed the Indian Army’s commitment to future readiness, technological innovation, and self-reliance, as it adapts to the challenges of a rapidly evolving security environment.
