In a landmark move toward secure and self-reliant communication, the Indian Army has replaced WhatsApp and similar platforms with its indigenously developed SAMBHAV (Secure Army Mobile Bharat Version) ecosystem during Operation Sindoor. The step marks a decisive shift in safeguarding sensitive military communication through homegrown technology.
SAMBHAV: Secure and Self-Reliant
SAMBHAV is a fully indigenous, end-to-end mobile communication platform designed exclusively for defense use. Operating on 5G technology, the system provides multi-layered encryption and ensures immunity against eavesdropping. Among its key applications is M-Sigma, which allows secure sharing of documents, images, and videosโserving as the Armyโs trusted alternative to WhatsApp.
Crucial Role in Operation Sindoor
Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi confirmed that SAMBHAV phones played a pivotal role in secure command and coordination during Operation Sindoor. He described the mission as a โlandmark, intelligence-driven responseโ that blended conventional military strength with modern technological capabilities, while also reflecting a whole-of-nation approach involving soldiers, commanders, scientists, and policymakers.
Strengthening Technological Sovereignty
The Army has already deployed nearly 30,000 SAMBHAV handsets since the projectโs launch. The system, built to be network-agnostic, secures communication across public cellular networks with advanced encryption. Plans are underway for further upgrades to enhance security and expand capabilities.
Expanding Strategic Use
Beyond battlefield operations, SAMBHAV has also been deployed during critical military talks with China. The ecosystem is viewed as a significant stride in the governmentโs Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, ensuring Indiaโs strategic independence and confidentiality in defense communications.
The adoption of SAMBHAV underscores the Armyโs commitment to future-ready warfare, technological innovation, and self-reliance in national security.
