Lieutenant General AVS Rathee, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Konark Corps, visited the Dhrangadhra Military Station to review the formation’s operational preparedness, troop morale, and futuristic training initiatives. The visit underscores the Indian Army’s continued commitment to excellence in one of its most strategically significant desert sectors under Southern Command.
Lt Gen Rathee praised the troops for their high state of readiness and adaptability to emerging operational challenges. Since its establishment in 1987, the Konark Corps popularly known as the Desert Corps has remained at the forefront of safeguarding India’s western borders. Headquartered in Jodhpur, the Corps draws its insignia from the Konark Sun Temple, symbolizing its resilience under extreme desert conditions.
His review comes in line with earlier high-level assessments, including those by Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, reflecting the Army’s focus on advanced training in difficult terrains. Studies, such as a 2020 RAND Corporation report, indicate that effective training and rigorous equipment maintenance can enhance military preparedness by up to 30% in such environments, a benchmark the Konark Corps appears to be meeting.
Located in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district, Dhrangadhra Military Station is a historic outpost with deep military and cultural roots. The name “Dhrangadhra” originates from dhunge dhara or dhingi dhara, meaning “stable land.”
During the visit, Lt Gen Rathee interacted with commanders and troops, emphasizing cutting-edge training and technological adaptation to counter evolving threats. His engagements highlighted the Southern Command’s role in maintaining readiness across India’s western desert front.
