In a solemn and prestigious military ceremony held at the New Military Station in Prayagraj, Maj Gen Amit Singh Sohal, VSM, officially took charge as the General Officer Commanding of the Purva Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Sub Area. The event marks a significant leadership transition within the Indian Army, highlighting the strategic importance of the region.
A distinguished officer from the Corps of Engineers, Maj Gen Sohal was commissioned in December 1990 and brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious career.
His operational expertise spans command tenures in the South Western and Eastern theatres, with notable international service during the United Nations Mission in Lebanon. India has maintained a robust presence in UN peacekeeping, deploying over 650 peacekeepers, including an infantry battalion group and a Level II Hospital, since 1998.
The ceremony underscored Maj Gen Sohalโs dynamic leadership, honed through his extensive background in the Corps of Engineers, a historic unit established post-1857 known for its engineering prowess and combat readiness.
Addressing the troops, he emphasized upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and dedication, signaling a renewed focus on operational preparedness, administrative excellence, and veteran welfare across the region.

This leadership change coincides with Prayagrajโs growing military significance, notably highlighted by the historic Northern Command Investiture Ceremony held in March 2024.
That event, held outside Udhampur for the first time, celebrated bravery and reinforced the regionโs role in strengthening defences along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) amid ongoing tensions. Maj Gen Sohalโs appointment is poised to further bolster these efforts, ensuring continued excellence in the Indian Armyโs strategic operations.
