In a significant shift in global military dynamics, India has overtaken China to become the third most powerful air force in the world, according to the latest rankings by the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA). While the United States remains the global leader, followed by Russia, India’s rise marks a notable recalibration of air power in Asia.
The WDMMA rankings, which evaluate 103 countries and 129 air services including army, navy, and marine aviation branches, consider factors such as fleet size, combat capability, logistics, modernization, and operational training. India’s air force, with a TruVal Rating (TVR) of 69.4 and a fleet of 1,716 aircraft, maintains a balanced composition of fighters (31.6%), helicopters (29%), and trainers (21.8%), sourcing equipment from countries including the U.S. and Russia.
India’s operational effectiveness was recently demonstrated during Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes in May 2025 targeting infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The operation, conducted in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, highlighted the IAF’s precision, coordination, and strategic reach, reflecting its growing air superiority in the region.
China, previously ranked third, now stands fourth in the global ranking with a TVR of 58.1. While Beijing continues fleet modernization and technology investment, factors such as training, close-air support, and specialized bomber capabilities have influenced its position relative to India.
The United States Air Force remains the undisputed leader with a TVR of 242.9, supported by strategic bombers, multi-role fighters, transport aircraft, tankers, and special-mission platforms. Russia ranks third, maintaining roughly a third of U.S. air capabilities, while India’s air power now surpasses all other nations, solidifying its strategic role in Asia.
Other top air forces include U.S. Army Aviation (4th), U.S. Marine Corps Aviation (5th), Japan Air Self-Defense Force, Israel Air Force, and France’s Air and Space Force.
Experts say India’s enhanced air capabilities signal a shift in regional power dynamics, particularly in South Asia, and will influence future strategic planning, defense posture, and deterrence planning worldwide.
