Meet Captain Radhakrishnan Nair, Youngest Ever Recipient Of Ashok Chakra In The History Of Indian Army

0
Captain Radhakrishnan Nair

Eight-year-old Harshan was quite different from children his age. When other children wanted to be engineers and doctors, he dreamt of joining the Indian Army. While still in Class 4, he persuaded his father K Radhakrishnan Nair to admit him to the Sainik School in Thiruvananthapuram so that he could realise his dream of becoming an army officer.

At the Sainik School, he excelled both at studies and extracurricular activities. There was no game he did not play; he was captain of the volleyball and basketball teams. In Class 12, he was the school captain and the best all round cadet.

He wanted to join the National Defence Academy, but failed in the NDA interview, which his father felt was due to over-confidence. “He was always an over-confident boy,” Radhakrishnan Nair recalls.

Tasting failure for the first time, Harshan was shattered.
He had no option but to obey his father and write the entrance exam for engineering colleges, in which he did well. He joined an engineering college in Kerala, but it was not possible for the youngster to abandon his dreams. Without his father’s knowledge, he again appeared for the the NDA entrance exam, and was selected.

After he secured admission to the NDA he broke the news to his father, who was insistent that Harshan finish his engineering course before joining the army.

But Harshan would have none of it. His dreams were more important than an engineering degree. His father requested a friend, a wing commander in the Indian Air Force, to persuade his son to first get an engineering degree. After speaking with Harshan for an hour, the IAF officer told Radhakrishnan Nair, ‘If you want your son to be happy, let him join the NDA.’Captain Radhakrishnan Nair
So, Harshan had his way and joined the NDA. After finishing the NDA course, he joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His parents travelled from Kerala to Dehradun to see him commissioned in the Indian Army. Harshan took his mother to the Balidan Mandir at the IMA and told her, ‘Amma, look at the names of the soldiers who have laid down their lives for the country. Can you see the message to their mothers? That all mothers should be proud of their brave sons. Amma, you should also be a proud mother if my name appears here…’ He was assigned to the elite paratroopers unit. In 2002, Lieutenant Harshan of the 2 Para completed his training in Kashmir. He was one of six young officers sent to Israel for special weapons training. In 2006, he was posted to Kashmir. Baramulla, March 7, 2007. Captain Harshan and his Red Devils unit captured a terrorist and recovered a cache of weapons. His commanding officer recommended Harshan for an award.

While interrogating the captured terrorist, Harshan discovered there was infiltration at Kupwara near the India-Pakistan border. He told his commanders that he would conduct a combing operation.

He spent the next two weeks in Kupwara, but no terrorist was found.

When his parents asked when he would come to see them, he used to say, ‘I am needed here. If I take leave, somebody else has to work more.’

But after the unsuccessful Kupwara operation, he applied for leave to go home.

March 20. His bags were packed and he was about to leave for Kerala when he heard that terrorists had been spotted in Kupwara.

He rushed back to Kupwara with 20 men. The mission was successful, and the Red Devils captured the terrorists.
As the unit returned from the heights, Captain Harshan was fired upon. He was hit in the thigh. He returned fire. The gun-battle continued for some time.

The captain was injured, but he stayed in charge, killed three terrorists and saved the lives of his men.

Before he could savour success, a sniper shot him in the neck.
He died, protecting our borders from our enemies.

When others his age read fiction, he read the Bhagavad Gita.

When others his age spoke about movies, he spoke about what the Gita had taught him. When others his age enjoyed the comfort of their homes, he fought terrorists in Kashmir.

Yes, this 26 year old was an extraordinary young man.
Never had his plans failed earlier. He was planning to come home, and he did come home.

Alas! home they brought the warrior dead.

Captain Harshan’s name has now been inscribed at the Balidan Mandir at the IMA, Dehradun. He is also the youngest officer to receive the Ashoka Chakra, the highest honour awarded during peace time, posthumously.

7 Tips To Handle SSB Conference

0
SSB Conference

SSB is a set of tests that takes 5 days to access the candidates and decides whether the candidate is suitable for the job or not. During preparation, candidates prepare for personal interview, GTO and psychology tests. But Conference is also a part of SSB and the stamping of final selection depends over the conference. In short, candidates should also prepare for conference. For this, we are here with some tips that can ease you in your preparation.

  1. Smiling Face – Keep a smile over your face during your conference. Don’t get into any kind of stress. All the assessors are there to conduct a short questioning drill. You just have to answer those in a simple and mannered way.
  2. Be Clear In What You Are Answering – During the conference, a candidate can be asked questions by any of the assessors. Stay alert and direct the correct answer to the correct person. Don’t get confused in the questions. The questions asked are casual.
  3. Don’t Criticize The SSB – Normally, the candidates are asked for any suggestion for changing the SSB testing criteria. You have to stay away from showing smartness by pointing mistakes or suggesting any change. The SSB testing is framed perfectly by highly experienced and qualified people. You can’t point error in testing pattern. Your criticism shows your non-adjustability.
  4. Avoid Asking Any Question Or Giving Suggestions – If you want to conclude your conference in a polite and stable manner, then avoid asking any question and suggesting anything. Your suggestion or your question will successively raise more questions and cross questioning can take you down.
  5. Maintain Posture – Maintain your posture and keep your body relaxed. But don’t lose your posture. Avoid shaking legs or shivering, walk in a gentle way and sit straight on the chair. While leaving the room, wish them “Good Day” and walk out of the door gently.
  6. Prepare The Questions That Were Asked in Interview, but not answered by you – Many times, it is observed that the questions that were asked by IO in the interview and not replied by the candidates, were asked again in the conference. It is a general way to check, how you are dedicated toward overcoming your failures.
  7. Follow the instructions given by CHM – Before commencement of the conference, CHM instructs all the candidates about where to wait before the conference, where to sit in the conference room, how to enter, how to leave etc… stick to those instructions and follow them.

Conclusion – SSB conference is also a crucial step that finalises the selection of the candidate. Be calm, act gently and face correct person while answering the question. Remember, all assessors will check your stress on your face. So keep calm and answer the questions in a relaxed manner. Practicing can make the task easy and can make it smooth.

11 Things Not To Do In A Group Discussion

0
Army Group Discussion 2016

We often find people discussing and talking about various social, economic and political matters. These discussions can be formal as well as informal. Informal discussions are the ones that take place with our friends in a restaurant, at a coffee shop, in canteens and other such places whereas a formal discussion takes place at an office, seminar halls, recruitment centres or other official venues.
A group discussion (GD) is a planned, structured and systematic interaction with a purpose behind it. The basic idea of a group discussion is to develop a better perspective on the main issue by incorporating the various viewpoints. The GD is used in the SSB (along with many other organizations) as a technique for personality assessment of the candidates for job selection. Generally, groups of six to eight members are made and they are given a topic to discuss within a limited time period (anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes). The topic might be a case, an opinion or a problem. The assessors are looking for particular skills in the candidates through the GD process.
The assessors are looking for the following skills and qualities in each candidate:

  • Subject knowledge
  • Oral communication skills
  • Listening skills
  • Use of appropriate language
  • Clarity of thought and expression
  • Positive attitude
  • Clear articulation
  • Leadership skills
  • Assertiveness
  • Self-confidence
  • Objectivity
  • Patience
  • Motivation
  • Adaptability
  • Persuasiveness

You might have seen or been a part of a GD in which it becomes extremely difficult to have a discussion without getting into an argument and starting a debate. It is extremely important that you try to exhibit each of the above-mentioned skill and quality to ace your GD. It’s a team activity where you as an individual are also being assessed. So you have to balance both the things. You need to emerge as the leader in your group and keep the GD on track.  Yet, there are some things that you should never do in a GD, if you don’t want to kill your chances of succeeding in it.

  1. Initiating the GD for the sake of it.
The direction of a GD depends on who is initiating it. The content here is very important. Don’t ever start a GD without having much facts and knowledge about it. Although it is advised that you should take the opportunity to initiate a GD, but with lack of proper content the initiation can backfire on you. The starting point needs to be powerful and impactful, not generic and obvious.
  2. Getting emotional.
In a GD, not everyone will hold the same view and opinion. Accept it. A group member might make a comment that might seem unacceptable to you or it might get your all excited and aggressive they will get benefited by it, not you. The mature way to handle such situations is to speak with facts and logic. Don’t lose your cool, be polite.
  3. Making sweeping statements.
Sweeping statements are strong, one-sided opinions that lack factual support. These kinds of statements may sound good but an assertion is of no use unless you can back it up with facts and/or logical reasoning. Think through a point before speaking and support it with facts.
  4. Over quoting the statistics.
While there are some people who simply under estimate the relevance of quoting the statistics in a GD, there are others who quote the facts and figures throughout the GD. Excess of anything is bad, same goes for the statistics. Over quoting the statistics weakens the impact of what you say. Don’t make it your assertion; make it a support to your assertion.
  5. Using complex English.
While speaking in a GD, you have to make sure that everyone understands you, otherwise how will you make people believe in what you are saying? Use of too complex, long sentences and presenting your opinion in a complicated manner will make other lose interest in you. Speak in a simple manner. Conversely, the use of Hindi and other informal words should also be avoided.
  6. Being over polite.
Keeping a non-fading smile on your face throughout the GD and nodding and shaking your head to whatever the other members are saying will get you nowhere. Too much of over politeness and smiling leads to suspicion. Also it gets irritating after a while!
  7. Speaking fast.
Since the GD is time bound, it’s a common misbelief that speaking fast will buy you more time and you will be able to talk more and give more views. In fact, speaking fast leads you to lose track of what you are talking, your thoughts don’t remain connected. The slower you speak the better since in that way you make each word count.
  8. Looking at the GTO.
The GD is taking place between you and your other group members. The GTO is not a part of that discussion. He is an observer. Looking at the GTO or looking at the ceiling won’t help you in any way. You are speaking with your group members so maintain a proper eye contact with them, no one else. Making eye contact with the GTO shows that you are seeking his approval.
  9. Digressing from the topic.
A topic has been given to you and you are expected to complete your GD within a specified time period. As a good team member you need to make sure that the GD isn’t diverting to another parallel topic. It’s easy for such a situation to happen but it should be checked. Stick with the topic given to you and discuss accordingly.
  10. Underestimating the power of your body language.
Along with what is being said, the assessor is looking at what is not being said. The way you sit, your posture, the way you make eye contact, everything nonverbal is being observed by the GTO. So pay heed to this aspect as this is the most avoided one.
  11. Not speaking at all.
This is the blunder of blunders that one can do in a GD. It’s a group discussion and it is expected that each group member has to voice their opinion about the given topic. Not speaking at all will convey all the wrong things about to the GTO.

Officers Like Qualities - Indian Army vs US Army

Most officers lead a complex, technical life, with many highly specialized duties to perform. These duties are his responsibilities as an individual, and as a highly-trained, responsible member of an exacting profession. In addition, he has to lead his men. An officer does not exist for his individual, personal value, but for his ability to show the way and make his men want to follow. This is indeed the core of the officer’s existence and, without it no hope exists of grappling with the tasks of command. It is seen at its simplest in warlike operations, but the power to lead smoothes the way of every task in every branch of a military organization, whether in war or peace. It breathes that vitality into an organization that will take a collection of men, buildings and machines, and waken them to purposeful, effective life. How is it done? First, by force of character. It breathes that vitality into an organization that will take a collection of men, buildings and machines, and waken them to purposeful, effective life. How is it done? First, by force of character. Clearly, people are not all born with the same characteristics, and some from their earliest years have felt the power to show others the way, and to influence their minds. We call them born leaders, and they are just that; born with strong, independent, assertive minds just as some are born with a good natural physique. But this is not to say that the characteristics of effective leadership cannot be acquired, just as a good physique can be cultivated with suitable effort.

In all of the words spoken and written about leadership, one fundamental point continually emerges; namely that, for most, the skills of leadership are not normally acquired instantly. The training of a leader, whether it be formal or through experiences, takes many years. Appropriate experiences are necessary, both to build and develop the leader’s own force of character, and also to increase his ability to influence others.Officers Like Qualities - Indian Army vs US Army

Military and naval history is full of effective leaders such as Gen KM Cariappa, Gen SHFJ Manekshaw, George Washington, Wellington, Nelson, Bonaparte, Montgomery and Rommel who rose to the top, not by preferment or substantial support from acolytes, but simply because of their abilities, both strategic and personal, which enabled them to inspire their men and, most importantly, achieve military success.

Recommended From 21 SSB Bhopal For Indian Army [Rank #2]

Success can be delayed but cannot be denied. Recommended from 21 SSB Bhopal for SSCT 46 [Rank #2]

Landed up in Bhopal railway station day before SSB date. Good city, my first visit to the city, excitement. This was my 2nd SSB, 1st medical out because of myopia (NDA batch 121). I did LASIK 2 years ago for that and came again. SSB after 8 long years and nervousness to prove “I HAVE IT IN ME” second time. I am accompanied with 2 more friends and tried to get some hotel but all hotels are previously occupied and others are too costly. Then one of friend told me about Gurudwara, we checked the availability of rooms there and yes we got one. Good start and help by god itself.

Day 1:

Documents verified, and filled up some forms. We all had breakfast, fueled with tea. Screening test took place, I wrote proper story and did as instructions given. At the time of discussion fish market is formed, as expected. Everybody was trying to express himself. One of the officers stopped us and divided group into half. I was in 2nd group, 1st group discussion was messed up. Nobody was listening to anyone, they just went on. Same thing happened with our group but I jumped into the discussion with loud voice and others came down. Discussion last for 2 minL, that’s it 2 min!! Then aptitude test was good, almost attempted all questions. And to my joy when result came out I was screened in. 37 out of 332 were screened in. Out of 37, 10 were already recommended, 15 repeaters, 12 freshers. What I understand that to get screened in most imp is to express yourself good and be good listener. Then we filled up PIQ forms and other documents. Then I had dinner with friends.

Day 2:

Got up early (most of engineers sleep at that time) and took bath with cold water as all geyser bathrooms were occupied. TAT was good. WAT was not as I expected even I have attempted all. And I messed up sequence in SRTL. Not feeling good because the mess I have done and here come another shock, I was called up for interview and I am first to get interviewed.

TAT- attempted all stories.

WAT- 60 words

SRT- 40

PI: Interviewing officer started with my performance in physiological tests. Then he asked about my day and previous SSB interview. Then he asked about my whole life from 4th standard to engineering and my previous job. 2 long questions in between and then he asked me about sports and I messed up here. I was not aware of dimensions of Hockey field; even I am not able to answer him about HILL. Then he asked me technical questions and I answered some of themL.  He asked me speed-distance-time question and general knowledge about India. Most of my interview was based on my personal life and relation. Question to think on was “WHY DON’T I HAVE ANY GIRLFRIEND?” My dear single friends please prepare for this question, don’t ignore. Any question will make you a hero from a zero in front of IO. Overall interview was not up to my expectations; I could have done better. I was feeling too bad for day 1, all I did was mess. In the evening I called up mom, she boosted me up for day 2.

Day 2 and 3:

GTO was best thing about SSB.

Group discussion: listen more, talk sense, give valid and logical points and support good points. Quality matters here.

Group tasks: be listener, supporter, give new solutions, encourage team.

Lecturette: if you are good with group you can get through as it gives you confidence to speak on and give a shit.

Overall GTO tasks were good. I had given my best. Well done!! Went to Vanvihar with friends, did cycling and enjoyed a lot. All stress went off. You must do something to remove your stress and to give a best next day.

Day 4:

Everybody was tied up for conference. We exchanged each other’s contacts. When my turn came it was good to see everyone in uniform. My IO asked me few simple questions about stay and all. He asked me to leave and I thanked him and left. One of the officers came up with results and he announced randomly. 4 were recommended and I am the last to be announced.  Out of 10 already recommended people they selected 4, this means it doesn’t matter if you are previously recommended or not but what matters is your performance during SSB. I felt sad for friends but it’s just a part of life (haar k baad hi jeet hai J). Most imp thing is I got 36 more friends.Recommended From 21 SSB Bhopal 2 -Recommended From 21 SSB Bhopal 1

Medicals went smooth. Got 2 temporary rejectionsL. I cleared them in BHDC. I cleared all the tests.
