Trust Your Preparation and Selection Process

Its been a year since I blogged this website! You can read my last article – Recommended for Army, Navy and Air Force. I am happy to see so many topics posted everyday which directly or indirectly help the defence aspirants. One must be pretty clear that what makes the difference between an officer of the armed forces from the rest.


THE DIFFERENCE
It is that the ability and power to command the men under you. Those men are ready to lay down their lives for you, the unit and ultimately the nation.
It is now, for the coming generations a tough decision in what to make a career – in the software, management, medical, space, business, teaching, civil services or the armed forces. If you really love and determined to do something, without any second thought go for it. Anybody may get motivated to join the forces at any time. If is it so, the goal is not so far.
As stated in my earlier articles, you really need not be a super hero to join this elite profession, It is that you become the simplest man but with heroic skills you never imagined and that is only after the training and it is the responsibility of the training academies. You will be the survivor of your own.
ARMY NAVY OR AIRFORCE??
Now it is a question mark whether it is the Indian Air force, the Navy or the Army. As told, love something.. If you have a passion for flying and soaring the skies, None can match the Air force. If it is the waters and adventures which amaze you, then its the Navy. If it is the combo of the above along with the spirit to command and the will to fight, then it is the Army. But ultimately, whatever u choose, you are all under one roof. The Indian government gives the privilege of setting a class one gazetted officer status at the age of 21 or 22 years approx only for the officers in the Armed forces.

A SMALL TRUTH !
For those who think that after joining this profession, there is nothing to study but only perks. It is a perfect Myth!
There is a lot to study and your progress depends on how you perform! So exam fever will be a common occurrence in your life 😉
Now to make all these come true, except a few, many of us feel the greatest hurdle as the SSB.
Again, love your selection process! Where else in the world will the government spend 5 days in selecting a potential candidate?
HAVE NO DOUBTS IN THE FOLLOWING THINGS

  1. Preparing adequately and knowing what SSB does.
  2. Approaching any officer for help and guidance.
  3. Home work on your communication skills, basic aptitude.
  4. Updating oneself with current affairs and general awareness.
  5. Be an organiser of any event in your school/college. You will come to know what is the level of effort needed to make it happen.
  6. Social interactions and mingling with your new set of friends.
  7. Sense of dressing, behaviour, walking, handling things – smarter.
  8. Take up any responsibility or appointment in your institution, thus taking initiatives in doing any task.

Finally, I won’t mention them as NR s or conference out .. I would rather tell, for those whose success is delayed, learn from your past.
After each attempt you give, introspect. Spend time in writing your full experience, how did u perform in each test, where were you stuck up, at which point were u blank out in interview, why did you stammer in lecture and GD, which thing you felt as difficult to attempt, what can be the remedies. Combine all these with all other’s experiences too. Before going for the next attempt, read all your experiences and be careful on what  to do and what not to do. You will never commit any mistakes thereon. Jot down each and every question put to you in interview and conference, accept interviewing officer’s points, remember to improve it in the next attempt.
Remember, majority of us are judged only in the conference. So don’t take it lightly. Who knows, 20 seconds may decide the making of an officer.!
For those who are on the final lap, already waiting for merit n call letters, You are what you are. Perform your best. Don’t get injured during the training period nor get involved in any disciplinary grounds. Else the toil for achieving your dream may be doomed.

Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Mysore Experience

I was in my seventh semester of college and my friends and fellow classmates were all busy with their preparation for placements and higher studies, sitting with Aptitude books and preparing their resumes and SOPs. I somehow was not interested in both. I was always fascinated by planes and admired them when they flew above the sky. I spoke about my admiration of planes to a senior of mine who was then undergoing training with the Indian Air Force. I was inspired by his speech which had been like the beginning of my career. I applied for the Air Force Common Admission Test or AFCAT 2/2014. This entrance test happens twice a year which is the entry test for candidates willing to join the Air Force. The portions were quite a lot but the exam was easy. This test takes place at any of the Air Force Stations you have preferred in the application form. The test was for 2 hours and had 100 questions. I cleared the exam and was asked to report at one of the selection boards among Mysore, Varanasi, Dehradun and Gandhi Nagar. There were convenient dates and I chose to report at the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Mysore on the 15th of December.

The Mysore center was called ‘2 AFSB’. This selection procedure goes on for 6 days and is the same for Army, Navy and Coast Guard except that they call it SSB which means Service Selection Board.
DAY 1:
It was the 15th of December and I woke up at 5 so that I would report on time. The reporting time was 6:45 at the Railway Station. My father and I arrived there well before 6:30 only to see a bunch of girls like me, either with their parents or alone carrying huge luggage. Mine was a girls batch with 185+ people. There was a military truck to carry all our luggage and 2 buses to take us to the selection board. I hopped into one of these and bid my father goodbye. The selection board was 10 minutes from the station. I had already made friends with some girls in the bus. On arriving at the selection board, we were asked to deposit our mobile phones in a brown bag (They would return it only when going back). We were asked to proceed to a hall and asked to fill some forms for our Travelling Allowance (TA). Breakfast was provided to all 187 of us and the first test of the selection began. It was called Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test which had some verbal and non-verbal questions. We were given 35 minutes for 80 questions. After this, we were assigned chest numbers according to our date of birth from the youngest to the eldest. My no. was 9.
The second test was called the Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT).A hazy picture was shown to us and were asked to write a story within 4 minutes on whatever comes to our mind at that moment. We were then divided into groups of 15 and had to narrate our story to 3 testing officers. We then had to discuss our stories and come up with the best one within the stipulated time. We couldn’t finish the discussion though! Then lunch was provided and the results were announced after an hour. Only those who get selected here will stay on for the remaining 5 days and the rest had to go back. I was so thrilled to hear my number being called out. 72 of us were screened in and our documents were verified. My new chest number was 4. We filled up certain forms including the Personal Information Questionnaire(PIQ) which would we verified during our interview.We were allocated rooms (10 per room) in a building named ‘AASHIYANA’ which means comfortable stay. The stay was comfortable indeed!

2 afsb mysore experience

As we did not have our mobile phones, there was a phone booth with 2 phones for 72 people! There were 4 computers for browsing and we had to stand in big queues waiting for our turns to inform our parents. The stay and food were for free. The mess was named ‘TRUPTI’ which means satisfied! The mess had huge photos of MiGs, Sukhois and the Air Force Academy. There was also a big poster on the history of the IAF with pictures of various aircrafts during each war. Even if one had come there by compulsion, I’m sure they would have been truly inspired by the way things are organized there.
The selection board campus was very clean and there were placards everywhere with motivational quotes. There was a recreation room with Carrom, Table Tennis, Chess, TV, etc. The person in-charge was Wing Commander Krishna. He was one of the nicest persons I’ve ever seen. He attends to each and every one of us at all times with care. Dinner was at 8 PM and we had our roll call at 9. He was there right on time and enquired about the food and arrangements.
DAY 2:
We were woken up by the speakers in every room playing ‘Vande Maataram’ and other patriotic songs. It was hard for me to wake up at 5 in that cold Mysore weather. Bed tea/coffee was served at 5:30 and breakfast was at 6:30. We were to assemble for our roll call in front of the Aashiyana building at 7:10 and report to the testing center at 7:15. This procedure was followed for all the 6 days. I had my Pilot Aptitude Battery Test(PABT) that morning as I had applied for the Flying Branch of the IAF. To become a pilot with the Air Force, one has to take this test compulsorily. This is once-in-a-lifetime test and its result is valid throughout our career. Girls who did not take up flying branch had the morning off. The test had 2 parts- Written and Simulator. Only those who clear the written part were qualified to appear for the Flight Simulator. I gave my best to clear the written part. The result of the simulator test was announced only on the final day.
After lunch, all 72 of us were present in the testing hall for Psychological Tests. The first test was Thematic Apperception Test(TAT) where 12 slides of pictures were shown one after the other for 30 seconds each and we were asked to write a story for 4 minutes. The next was Word Association Test(WAT), where, 60 wordds are displayed for 15 seconds each and we were asked to make sentences using each word. The test that followed was Situation Reaction Test(SRT). 60 situations were given for a time of 30 minutes and we were asked to react to those. The last test was Self-Description Test(SDT) and we were asked to describe ourselves from our parents, teachers and friends’ point of view and also what we wanted to be in the future. The time alloted was 10 minutes. After these tests, we went back to our hostel.
There was a ‘motivation room’ which contained books-both fiction and defence books, newspapers, magazines, a fish tank, ranks and badges of the officers, aircraft models, posters, pictures of the Air Chief Marshals, etc. I used to spend some time there and discuss the current issues with my friends there.
DAY 3:
We were divided into groups of 9 and were dressed in white for our Group Task(GT). We proceeded to the GT ground at 7:15 in the morning instead of the testing hall. Only 4 groups had their GT that day and the remaining girls either had interview or were free. Our Group Testing Officer(GTO) was Wing Commander Bharat. Our first test was the Group Discussion(GD). 2 topics were given and we spoke for 5 minutes on each topic. After the GD was the Group Planning Exercise(GPE). A situation was given along with the model of a village and we had to write down the solution for it. We were then asked to combine all our ideas and come up with the best solution.
After the Indoor activities, the first Outdoor activity was the Progressive Group Task(PGT). There was a start line and a finish line and we were given helping materials like a rope, plank, etc and were asked to bridge some structures in between and use them to reach the finish line. The allocated time was 45 minutes. Next was Half-Group Task(HGT) which had the same procedure as PGT with half the number of people. The next race was called Snake Race and we had to cross 6 obstacles like jumping on a wall, passing through a hanging tyre, etc carrying a huge snake-like object. We competed with other groups and each group had a war-cry. Ours was ‘Vande Maataram’ and we came 2nd. The main aim of the race was not to win it but to see how we help others in the group and assist them.
The last test was the Lecturette. We had to choose a topic among 4, prepare for 3 minutes and give a speech for another 3 minutes. We were so tired after this long day and went back to our hostel.
DAY 4:
The fourth day started again with GT but this time it was not a group task but individual ones. The first test was called Command Task(CT). One person has to command 2 helpers and complete a particular physical task and reach the finish line. Our GTO was very friendly and even if we did not come up with a solution, he helped us. The final physical task was the Individual Obstacles. We had to finish 7 tasks in 3 minutes which included climbing on a ramp, walking on a rope, monkey-crawling, rope-climbing, etc.
After 2, we were allowed to go outside but report back before 8 in the night. A group of 15 of us went to the Mysore Palace and to the Garuda Mall that day.
DAY 5:
Many of the girls were free that day but I had my Personal Interview(PI). My interview went on for 45-50 minutes and was more of an informal one. The Interviewing Officer(IO) was friendly and calm and listened patiently to all my answers.
That day again, 13 of us went out to an exhibition nearby. It was an amazing experience to go on rides and to eat the roadside food there. We came back before 8 and had our dinner. This was our last night in the selection board together and we made a plan to celebrate. A group of 20 of us went to the recreation room and started dancing to Bollywood music! Since most of the girls were from the north, I taught them tamil folk dance and they loved it!
DAY 6:
This was our final day and after the conference, the results were to be announced. We packed our bags and went for the conference. This was another informal meeting with all the Selection Board members(about 20 officers). It was for less than 2 minutes and then we waited in the testing hall.
The PABT results were announced first and I cleared it! I was so very happy. The Wing Commander then started announcing the ‘Recommended’ candidates and my number was called out first! I was crying with joy. 7 were selected from a total of 187. I was proud of myself! My friends were there to encourage me eventhough they did not make it. They promised they would come back next time and join me. I was so happy to convey this message to my parents after 7 odd hours of document-filling! I stayed in the selection board along with the other 6 recommended candidates.
The next morning, we were dropped at the railway station and our mobile phones were returned to us, finally! I was so very glad I made it and filled with excitement, that, I spoke over phone to my friends and family for over 7 hours, telling them the entire story!
Overall, this AFSB was one hell of an expeerience! I made new friends, learned a new language, learned about planes, learned about punctuality, learned about discipline and lastly, learned that failure is not the end of the world and that I will never give up. I thank everyone for being supportive. There were people there who got recommended on their 13th attempt! So keep trying, stay confident and stay focussed. I’m still left with my Medical test which confirms my selection for the Indian Air Force. So, fingers crossed! 🙂

Indian army has published the ssb interview dates for TES 33 Technical Entry Scheme for the course commencing in OTA, Gaya from July 2015 onward. Candidates can check their TES 33 centre allotment and SSB centre. TES 33 ssb interviews are being conducted at SSB Allahbad, Bhopal and Bangalore.

Indian army has set the cut off marks for TES 33 entry as minimum 85% in PCM (12th). Candidates who have applied for TES 33 and have 85% or more in PCM are eligible to attend the TES 33 ssb interview.

NDA 134 SSB Interview Dates. Call up details of provisionally eligible applicants received from UPSC at air hq for 134 NDA course (with air force as first choice) are given in the list below. Candidates are to report for SSB testing at the place, time & date mentioned against respective names. A representative of the air force selection board in air force uniform will receive the candidates and escort them to the air force selection board.

Call letters are being dispatched for SSB interviews from the respective AFSB as given against the names. In case call letter is not received, candidates may report to respective AFSB with a print out of this page along with the page where the name of the candidate is reflected.

Candidates within same municipal limits of AFSB will not be tested at that AFSB. Such candidates are requested to contact the telephone number given below for alternate AFSB.

NDA 2 2014 Written Exam Result Declared by UPSC. On the basis of the result of the written part of the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II) 2014 held by the Union Public Service Commission on 28th September, 2014, candidates with the under mentioned Roll Nos. have qualified for Interview by the Services Selection Board of the Ministry of Defence for Admission to Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of the National Defence Academy for the 134th Course and for the 96th Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC) commencing from 2nd July, 2015. The result of 01 candidate has been withheld.


The candidature of all the candidates whose Roll Nos. are shown in the list is provisional. In accordance with the conditions of their admission to the examination, “candidates are requested to submit original certificates of Age and Educational Qualification to respective Service Selection Boards (SSBs) during the SSB interview.” The candidates must not send the Original Certificates to the Union Public Service Commission. For any further information, the candidates may contact Facilitation Counter near Gate ‘C’ of the Commission, either in person or on telephone Nos. 011-23385271/011-23381125/011-23098543 between 10:00 hours and 17:00 hours on any working day. The result is also available at Union Public Service Commission’s Website http://www.upsc.gov.in 

NDA 2 2014 Written Exam

The mark-sheets of the candidates, will be put on the Commission’s website within fifteen (15) days from the date of publication of the final result. (after concluding SSB Interviews) and will remain available on the website for a period of sixty (60) days.

With this simple motive, I am here to share some STATISTICS on different government policies, schemes and other initiatives. I assure you all that if you would be able to elaborate your sayings with a mixture of these statistics it would be fruitful.

Statistics On Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan(Clean India Mission)

  • Total budget – Rs. 60,000cr per year.
  • 68% of rural households have no toilets.
  • 78% sewage dumped in rivers.
  • 6000 tonnes of plastic waste littered daily.
  • 68.8mn tonnes of waste per year.
  • 41mn missing toilets.
  • 597mn(approx. 600mn) defecating in the open.
  • Even poorer countries fare better.
  • Lack of sanitation is costing India 6.4% GDP.
  • Good sanitation could boost annual per capita income by Rs. 6000 a year.
  • Yet we spend 260 times more on food than sanitation.
  • E.g. $26bn spending on subsidized food and $200mn spending on sanitation.

Greetings to all gallant aspirants, there are many apprehensions and confusions regarding group discussions. Today we will try to obliterate all doubts and dilemmas about the same. Be it in screening or GTO tasks, we are required to deliberate and discuss about an issue in the group. Here candidate’s thoughts are put into scrutiny and it is his behaviour in the group which matters.Therefore, it is important to keep certain things in mind while going for group discussion.

  1. Speak Sense :- You might have encountered a few people who shout at the top of their voice but speak the same point over and over again. The assessors are experienced enough to know who is in what depth. Be it any type of GD, always keep in mind that it is not how much you speak, it is what you speak. Your ideas should be acceptable and practical. If you do so, the other group members will agree to you which consequently will make it easier for you to succeed in the GD.
  2. Have Knowledge :- Though most topics in the GD are of average level, it is imperative that you have profound knowledge about cardinal aspects of the world in which we live. If by chance a topic like ‘Indian Foreign policy’ is given to you, unless you have deeper understanding of this topic you cannot continue speaking. That is why it is important to be acquainted with current affairs and other important topics. With knowledge you will not only impress your group members but also the assessors.

  3. Stay Lively :- Having a smile around your face will not even cause you a penny but will fetch you lots of points. There will be times when people will not accept your ideas, just keep your calm at that point. Like you, every other individual has the liberty to speak his mind. Even if you disagree with someone, have a smile around your face and put across your point. Mind you, there are no right and wrong points in the GD. The way in which you propound your points is important.
  4. Don’t Be Rigid :- An officer never snubs the opinion of others. Respect every other opinion which comes across. It is not important that you stick to your opinion till the very end. Remember, this is a GD not a debate. Have a big heart. Even if the other person is saying something vacuous, don’t try to rebuff him.
  5. Give Chance :- Once you have spoken for a fair amount of time and have contributed enough to the GD, give chance to people who want to speak but aren’t getting heard. Remember, it is a group discussion and not a lecturette. Giving chances to all gives an impression that you are considerate towards the weaker group members. Having said that, don’t act like a moderator of the GD, first you keep your points thoroughly then give the chance to others.
  6. Avoid Emotions :- By becoming impetuous you are only digging your own grave. Avoid abrupt reactions and queer expressions. It is not an informal group discussion in which you can create a furore. Bear the demeanor of an officer who doesn’t let emotions take over him.
  7. Give Examples :- Have some source, example and corroboration to support your opinions. For instance give the example of your city when you are speaking about traffic rules, crime against women or any other thing to which you can relate. In this way your words will not only become palatable, but also convincing to the listeners.
  8. Eschew Fish market :- How much ever you try to avoid it, some vitriolic candidates will make the situation worse. If you want to put a point, ask the members to calm down and then speak. Don’t bother about the assessors, they are astute enough to gauge your potential.

Apart from all these points, avoid looking at the assessors in order to check whether you are getting heard or not. Concentrate on the process rather than the result. Just behave in a gentlemanly manner and you will have no problems whatsoever in the group discussions.

Five Resolutions That Aspirants Must Have For The New Year

Resolutions are like an inseparable part of new-year. With every new-year, comes a lot of new resolutions, which go unnoticed as the year passes by. Thus with the passing years, for us now, resolutions are just fun things, which we make every December, and forget somewhere in mid-January. Friends, resolutions are not something to forget, they are something to follow, and being defence aspirants, you must stick to the promises you make. I have listed below five must have resolutions, which defence aspirants must have for the new-year. I hope you follow atleast one of them, and by follow I mean throughout the year. Comment any other resolution which you have made, or would like to share with us.

Five Resolutions That Aspirants Must Have For The New Year

  1. The resolution to sleep and wake up a little early: “Early to bed and early to rise keeps a person healthy wealthy and wise”, an old saying, which we have forgotten in the era of internet and smart phones. The saying now is “late to bed and early to rise is giving us headache and a swollen eye”. We stay up till late, then struggle in the morning while going to school/college or for work. We are in such a rush in the morning that we forget so many things, including eating and smiling. We reach to our destination with a frown on our face. The reason I am listing this resolution here is, in defence, right from the SSB, you need to wake up early, everything is scheduled, you can’t even sleep five minutes extra. And you need proper rest, so it’s better to sleep a little early and thus wake up a little early too.

  2. The resolution to read: A well-read person can achieve fortunes. Never underestimate the power of reading. Reading has so many benefits, for everybody. For the aspirants it is like a boon. If you are reading enough, you can stay updated with the current things, you can get an excellent vocabulary, you can have a good command over English and you can gain ample knowledge. Make sure you are reading good magazine/book/newspaper/articles.
  3. The resolution to stay fit: For everybody fitness is important for carrying out day-today chores with ease. Once you go for SSB, you’ll realize that fitness is much more important than that. You need to get through long days, you need fitness for that, you need to do outdoor exercises, you need fitness for that, and if you get through the SSB and go for the training then you need a class apart fitness. Fitness does not mean that you need to go running to the gym for a body like Arnold, or start playing a sport to excel like Saina Nehwal. Fitness for you is simply going for a jog in the morning, or evening, or doing mild exercises.
  4. The resolution to stop Procrastinating: Procrastination is a disease of the young generation. We keep on procrastinating until it is a life and death situation. From studies to household chores, from meeting a friend to getting a haircut, we procrastinate anything and everything. If you are not bitten by this snake of procrastination , you are lucky. However, those who love it, should make a resolution to stop it this year. Preparation for SSB is a continuous and rigorous affair, if you’ll keep on procrastinating it’ll affect your preparation.
  5. The resolution to “keep trying”: If you are an aspirant, you’ll understand the importance of not losing hope. It is tough to get rejected and try again. Since you want to get into the forces, you should have determination to make this dream a reality. You might fall down many times but if you have the will, you’ll keep on trying. So do not lose hope when you fail.

JAG 15 Notification Indian Army Recruitment. JAG entry scheme 15th course Oct 2015 short service commission course for law graduates men and women. The Indian Army is looking for the best and the brightest LAW GRADUATES Married/Unmarried men and unmarried women for grant of Short Service Commission in the Indian Army for Judge Advocate General Dept.

JAG 15 Eligibility 

  • Vacancies. Men – 10, Women – 04
  • Conditions of Eligibility
    • Nationality. Must be an Indian Citizen.
    • Age Limit. 21 to 27 years (Born not earlier than 02 Jul 88 and not later than 01 Jul 94).
    • Educational Qualification: Minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB Degree (three years professional after graduation or five years after 10+2 examination). The candidates should be eligible for registration with Bar Council of India/State. Candidate should from a  college/University recognized by Bar Council of India.

JAG 15 Method of Selection

The Selection process to be followed is indicated below:-
  • Initial shortlisting of online applications will be done at Recruiting Directorate Army Headquarters and the decision of DG Recruiting will be final. In this regard no representation will be entertained. Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) reserves the right to shortlist applications and to fix cutoff percentage of marks without assigning any reason.
  • Candidates whose applications are found in order shall be detailed to appear at the Service Selection Board on a specified date where they will be required to undergo Group Tests, Psychological Tests and an interview for duration of five days excluding the date of reporting at the Service Selection Centre.
  • Two Stage Selection Procedure: Two stage selection procedure based on psychological Aptitude Test is held at Selection Centres. All the candidates will face stage one test on first day of reporting at Selection Centres. The candidates who qualify in stage one will be admitted to the second stage/remaining tests.Those who fail to pass stage one will be returned on the same date.
  • Those candidates who qualify stage II will submit the attested photo copy of educational documents mentioned in Para 25 (b) (i) to (viii) to Selection Centre for completion of their dossier/verification.
  • The candidates who qualify at the Service Selection Board and are found medically fit by a Medical Board will be placed in order of merit. The final selection will be made in that order up to the number of vacancies available at that time.

JAG 15 How to Apply

  • Applications will only be accepted online on website “www.joinindianarmy.nic.in”. Click on Officer Menu then go to How to Apply and then click ONLINE APPLICATION. Fill the online registration form. Note down the user ID and password. Tips to assist in filling up fields have been provided as you click on ONLINE APPLICATION. Before submitting the application check the entries made and save the application. After submitting, take two copies of the printout and the Roll Number generated by the system. 
  • Documents to be carried to the Selection Centre by the candidate:-
    • One copy of the Print out of application duly signed and affix photograph self attested.
    • Attested copy of Matriculation or equivalent certificate for age proof.
    • Attested copy of 12th Class Certificate & Marks sheet.
    • At tested copy of graduation Degree/Provisional Degree (in case of three years LLB after graduation).
    • LLB Degree/Provisional Degree.
    • Attested copy of Marks sheets of all years/Semesters.
    • Attested copy of registration with Bar Council of India/State/Certificate from college/University that the LLB Course in the said institution is recognized by Bar Council of India.
    • All certificates in original. Originals will be returned after verification at the Service Selection Board itself. Any candidate who does not carry these entire documents for the SSB interview, his candidature will be cancelled.
  • The second copy of the printout of online application is to be retained by the candidate for his reference. No need to send any hard copy to DG Recruiting.
  • Candidates must submit only one application. Receipt of multiple applications from the same candidate will result in cancellation of candidature.
