Five Common Mistakes in Group Discussion

Five Common Mistakes in Group Discussion

The Group Tasks are an important part of your Service Selection Board interviews. As you know, this Group Task consists of a series of tests. Group Discussion is generally the first test in this series. Group discussion in SSB consists of two rounds. In the first round the GTO gives two topics, out of which the candidates have to discuss amongst themselves and decide which one they want to speak on. This round consists of 20 minutes. The next round also consists of 20 minutes, where the GTO gives a topic of his own choice and asks the candidates to discuss on the same. However GD is a fairly simple test and does not require any such special skill, but still there are certain points which affect your performance. These points can be good speaking skills, patience and knowledge. There are some common mistakes which candidates do in the group discussion.

Five Common Mistakes in Group Discussion

  1. Waiting for the right time: There will never come a perfect time to speak. You’ll have to snatch that time amongst the discussion. So wait for an opportunity where you can enter the discussion. This moment needs to be very appropriate, otherwise it’ll look like you are shouting and dominating. Wait for a chance where the volume of the whole group comes down a bit, then just speak in a firm, not rude voice. Make your voice count, don’t speak along with the group in a herd.
  2. Not listening to others: Some candidates keep on speaking again and again thus not giving a chance to others to speak. While some candidates when start speaking, speak for a really long time. The audience gets bored due to this behavior. Moreover you tend to repeat your points, making a negative impression on the GTO. When you speak more and listen less, the GTO barely gets chance to judge others, so you appear like a very dominant person. When you start speaking speak for maximum of 60 seconds to 90 seconds, and give others a chance to speak.
Five Common Mistakes in Group Discussion
  3.  Trying to over-help: Candidates sometimes try to do charity by pretending to help others in the group. Thus they shout on other person’s behalf, let so and so chest number speak. Remember you are not there for charity, the so and so chest number made it till there without your help, and he/she is capable to do so now also. If you really want to appear like a leader, just listen to other people’s points without interrupting unnecessarily.
  4. Speaking for the sake of speaking: Do not speak just for the sake of speaking. Some candidates speak just because they have to, not because they have a point. If you just repeat other’s points or speak irrelevant things, it’ll definitely go against you. So speak only the relevant things, and points which actually contribute to the discussion.
  5. Not being themselves: Adopting extremes of behavior, like getting up from the chair or shouting on others is definitely not accepted. Also if you speak in a made up accent or do too many gestures then you appear fake. So be yourself, think like you are discussing things with friends.

Outside the Interviewing Officer’s Room

0

Personal interview is one of the three techniques by which the assessors assess you. It carries a major weightage in your selection process. It carries maximum marks and is the shortest test. So it is like that one jackpot question, by which you can win the lottery. Before the interview takes place, you are made to wait for a certain amount of time outside the room. This waiting time is spent generally in Ante room, in case of AFSB or in some other room, or sometimes under a tree in case of SSB. You are informed, most of the times, much before the interview. So before the start of your interview, you wait for your turn along with other candidates (as there are simultaneous interviews going on, as there are many interviewing officers, so those candidates are waiting for their turn).

Things which Happen Outside the Interviewing Officer’s Room

  1. Current Affairs Discussion:  This is the most common discussion and it happens every time, when you are sitting outside the room. Every candidate sitting there says some or the other news. Some are baffled on hearing them as they are new to them and some argue over other facts. Five national, five international and five sports news are the one’s discussed most commonly.
  2. Revision of facts about the services: There is also a very common discussion which is about the facts about the service you have applied for. The candidates seem to recite chants of commands, ranks and recent procurements. Chief of that service is a name repeated many times.
  3. The aftermath of others interviews: You can see a lot of candidates discussing the questions asked in others interviews, or in their previous interviews. They also discuss the officers, who is stricter, who is asking what type of questions and so on.
  4. Racing heartbeat: One thing common is that everybody will be having a racing heart. You’ll be nervous as to how the interview will go.
    Outside the Interviewing Officer’s Room

Things you should do

  1.  Mentally revise: Revise all your achievements, things related to your family, friends etc. Recall all what you have written in your PIQ form. Recall your preparations and your confidence level will instantly boost up.
  2. Don’t discuss: You know what you know, and you don’t know what you don’t know. Learning something at the 11th hour will only lead to nervousness. Even if you are able to gather some information, still you are not having the quality of information to go and present in front of the interviewer. It’ll further confuse you and you’ll get stuck in the interview. A plain simple honest “I don’t know sir”, will save you from all of this trouble.
  3. Don’t hesitate, just meditate: I don’t mean you to pull out your yoga mat and start doing yoga. Collect your thoughts, concentrate on the event which is about to happen. It is very important to relax your mind and feel mental peace. This will help you to concentrate more and beat your nervousness too.
  4. Drink a sip of water: Water will instantly calm you down and you’ll not feel that nervous. Since you have to speak a lot for a continuous duration, so it’s better to keep your throat hydrated. Do not drink too much of water, you know the aftereffects!
  5. Be ready: Being ready is not only mentally, See that your shoe and everything is proper and your hair are proper as well. Get ready in all aspects, the next few minutes will be the deciding factor of your SSB.
Good Luck! Happy Interview!

The elements of a successful interview

1
Interview is the easiest yet the trickiest part of SSB. Easiest because unlike the other tests, which comprise a number of small tests, in the battery, interview is just one test carrying major weightage. So a huge part of your selection depends on this test. It is tricky because you can never say whether your interview was good or bad. People who get thrashed in the interview get selected many times, and those who think their interview went like a cake walk, do not make it. And thus we call it tricky! However there are a few elements which contribute to a successful interview.

The elements of a successful interview

  1.  That smile, will take you miles: When you enter the room of the interviewing officer, you should not look unduly tensed or worried. Once you wish him, wish him with a smile on your face. Trust me, it’ll lighten up the situation. It’s understandable that you are tensed, but if you’ll smile in that stressed environment, it’ll reflect a great deal of positivity. The officer will sense that you are a confident person immediately.
  2. The walk and talk guide: You should enter the room smartly and not slouch while sitting. Shake hands firmly, if offered, and never offer a hand shake from your side. While talking, keep an audible tone, that is your tone should be neither too loud nor too feeble. It should be just like you are talking to a friend sitting a little distance away from you. Never try to speak in a fake accent, that sounds really funny!
    ssb interview
  3. When in SSB, speak the truth: Lie is a strict no for an officer to be. You can lie, if you are sure enough to defend it. But lies are caught over the course of time and also keep in mind that the person sitting in front of you is an expert. Interviewing officers are like the old and experienced mechanics of candidates, they have seen so many candidates and caught so many lies that they can easily catch yours. So make sure you never lie in the interview. This applies to the PIQ form also.
  4. Remember, he is a lazy guy: Every man is lazy by nature, so for every short question give a long answer. For instance, if he asks you where are you from, then give a detailed description of the place you are coming from. The more you speak, lesser questions he’ll ask, so definitely you need to speak your heart out. This way you’ll manage the time for the interview also, he’ll be satisfied to have learnt a lot from you and you’ll control your interview.
  5. Never beat around the bush: If you don’t know an answer for something, simply say no, rather than doing a guess work. You can guess but say that you are not sure. This shows honesty. Similarly never exaggerate anything you say. So keep your emotions under control and keep your mind open while answering, so that you know what you are speaking.

Passion, a word misused

0
Passion is a very strong emotion, not to be taken lightly. Passion is often associated with something you are crazy about, something for which you can do anything. People often associate passion with love and romance, which is yet another strong feeling. But here we’ll be taking about the passions which you may have in your life. It’ll be not wrong if I’ll say that if you really want to achieve something, you should be willing to do anything and everything to accomplish it. This whole emotion can be easily translated into one word that is passion. If you are passionate about something you are sure to get it, some day or the other. Many candidates go in the SSB and say that they are passionate to join the forces, they forget that this is a very string word, and thus shouldn’t be used lightly, as already said. If you go and say that you are passionate to join the forces, you should have evidence to prove that.

I know somebody who went and said in his interview that he is passionate about airforce, and when the officer asked him a few questions regarding airforce, in the later part of the interview, he couldn’t answer. So it was proved in minutes that he is not passionate about what he said.

How to tell if you are passionate about something:

  1. The first and most important thing is that you’ll have immense knowledge about that subject. If you like football, you must be having knowledge about its tournaments, some players, but if you are passionate about football you must know in and out of it. You must know every player, every club, pretty much everything.
  2. If your passion is a goal, you’ll never let it go. You’ll never say die, no matter how many times you face failure. You’ll leave no stone unturned to accomplish that goal and you’ll try again and again, learning a new thing from every failure you face.
    Passion%2C%2Ba%2Bword%2Bmisused

So in the interview when you are asked the reason why you want to join the forces, and you say that you are passionate about it, it is a very wrong way. You can be passionate about certain things in the forces, you can’t say that you are passionate about the fauj itself! You can be passionate about getting the uniform, you can be passionate about flying, aircrafts or weapons, or you can be passionate about ships. You can also be passionate about some sports or some hobby of yours, because of which you may want to join, as in the forces you get a fair chance to play and pursue you dream.
Passion is a very positive word, it channelizes your energies in a right direction. Every human who has a passion for something, has a very strong and positive personality. If you have passion for any hobby, or any anything, be it books, games or coins, you can always look forward to life.>

Determination: Something That Keeps You Going

0
determination

Things come easy for some of us, and for some of us they require a lot of hardwork, patience and testing times. While your friend might get the thing he desired for, in one shot, the same thing may require you to burn midnight oil. Hard earned things have more importance, more value and are special in their own way. The goals we set for ourselves are big. It is natural to set high standards to achieve. So what to do if you fail back to back, in getting your goals? Just keep going that is what is the gist of this article.

Determination is a great quality. It requires time to be developed. What is determination? It is the thing that keeps you going, even when everything is not in favor, just because you decided to go on. Determination is a quality which keeps you away from the fear of failure, and makes you brave enough to try again and again. Many dreams we have, are failed from being turned into reality just for the fear of failure. Often you realize that you gave up, when you were just a step away from the thing that you desired.Being a defence aspirant, you might have faced SSB, and failed there as well.

ssbinterviewbook

My guess is that if you opened up this article for reading, then definitely you are somebody who is trying hard to achieve his/her goals. Believe me you can achieve your goal, and your determination will keep you going for that. And everybody has that determination in them, its just you need to be good enough to recognize it and let it guide you. Determination is not some magical quality, it is small realist things which you do, to cherish your dreams.

  1. If you have tried for SSB many times and are clueless what goes wrong, seek an expert help. This help may be from a coaching institution, or from somebody you know, who has been in the board, and knows the things. You need to find out what is going wrong, otherwise there is no point in trying again, with the same approach.
  2. If you are tired of giving it a try again and again, and tired of people mocking you for that, then you just need to realize that it is your life. Nobody can do anything unless you want them to. Never give up because somebody else is saying you to. It might be that the opportunity you missed by listening to others, was the one which was going to change your world.
  3. Never give up, not yet, not until you are no more eligible to try.
  4. Do not waste time by running after it. Join a course, join a job and keep on giving your SSB’s as they come.
  5. Determination is the power which will make you work, and work hard, even if you have done 12 hours of job. If you are determined to achieve your goal, you’ll still sit down and prepare, and never procrastinate anything.
