Revealing Secret About The Myths Of BAD COMMUNICATION at SSB

0
Revealing Secret About The Myths Of BAD COMMUNICATION at SSB
“I am not good in communication!” “I am very bad in public speaking and I cannot express myself!” “Because of bad communication skills I feel low in confidence at SSB!” You might have heard such types of sentences from the aspirants who are otherwise very determined to join the forces. I have been receiving many queries now a day on the same and I thought it’s better to communicate on the common channel. Please understand that SSB is not a place where your flashy usage of big words is checked or how you produce your thoughts. It’s a place where things are psychologically judged and if that can be conveyed in simple language then no one can stop you from getting selected. Preference should be given only to personality development and improvement and not communication.

Now this does not mean that I should be bad at it and should not try to improve if I have claimed this point. Try to understand the dynamics that plays at SSB and what are the expectations of the forces. If you prioritise your work area and work accordingly, everyone has the potential to clear it. That’s not really an exam that needs preparation from books. I have seen people using books that actually don’t help in any sense and help them in adopting different personality which is not theirs actually. Books might guide you in a general sense of how things appear there and what all could be done, but never try to adapt the same methodology as it might reflect a confused personality there. Now let’s come to the English speaking part. See, English is used at SSB just to provide a platform for common understanding to all the aspirants there as they are from different parts of the country and this is the only language that’s common to all of us. That’s it. This is the simple reason of using this language, nothing else.
communication in ssb interview

“Working hard for something we don’t know is called stress, while working hard for something known is passion” So knowing why this language is being used give it only that much advantage. Pursue your passion for defence and never lose confidence because you are weak in English. Yes it can be improved with practice, so do it but never feel defeated. Language is just a tool of communication and nothing else. Don’t give it more advantage and work thoroughly on your personality. If you are weak in that , no one will accept you there. So start in right direction.

How To Perform Well In Screening Round of SSB?

PPDT and Screening Test

SSB is a five day process but only for some. Everyone who goes there after the shortlist is not lucky enough to encounter the pride for five days. There is a screening process where majority of elimination takes place and aspirants are sent back on the very first day itself. So I would request aspirants to gear up and prepare well for the first day so that they can also see the full five day stint at the battlefield namely SSB, where you need to revisit your life and the journey would be facilitated along with the assessors. Also the people who get the opportunity to spend five days are lucky as they area changed personality once they move out of that place and that change is permanent and brings a change in thought process that can affect whole of the life. I have personally seen different variety of people changing and speaking in different form once they come back.

How To Perform Well In Screening Round of SSB

So it’s of utmost importance that you should be gear up for performing better on the first day so as to save yourself from elimination. The following tips might help and would facilitate movement in next rounds if sincerely followed:
  • Don’t take aptitude lightly and keep regular practice of it. I know it’s easy, but why to take risk. I have seen people preparing for big exams like CAT and other such high level exams getting rejected on the very first day just because of over confidence. So maintain you pace in this area.
  • Next thing to keep in mind is that you should spend a lot of time in self-introspection so as to build up appropriate psychology as needed in the SSB. Don’t start in the last moment and then nothing could be achieved. So start early and build it as PPDT is judged that way only.
  • Your stories written in PPDT round are the first exposure to officers which proves whether you have it in you or not. So the story should be a perfect match and replica of your personality and even the slight mismatch would lead to rejection at this stage or later in psychology.
  • Next is individual narration which shows how you are and what you have. It should be practiced well and the narration in front of officers should be flawless.
  • Then is the GD, where you need to come to consensus and should prove your behaviour in a team. How to do well in GD has been covered in other topics and articles written by me
    PPDT and Screening Test
Body language in such an exercise is very important and I would deal it in a separate article. Also remember that if story and individual narration is proper half the battle is won in this round. Learn and practice well. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for olq’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected]or add me on Fb and drop in a message. It would be a pleasure to help the future officers that are getting ready to safeguard my motherland.

Want To Be An Officer In Armed Forces? BE A LEADER FIRST

0

Getting into the Armed Forces is a dream comes true for all the defence aspirants. But when I m talking of DREAM I am concerned about the measurable dream, or you can say it should be quantifiable. There should be a clear ending that can be measured by you. As for example: Suppose you have a friend who has recently joined the forces after a year of rigorous training. You got motivated and dreaming of becoming an officer like him. Till this point you are blank enough and only thinking of a hazy picture of being an officer.

So, what point I am trying to make here is, after getting motivated first you should draw a clear picture and should set a ROAD MAP to reach that point. Then only you are supposed to DREAM (not before that).
Now I am trying to show to the real ROAD MAP of becoming an officer (here I am not going to describe the stages to cross for becoming an officer, which you can get in plenty in the SSBCrack.com). But I am going to set the mood and lay down the process of becoming an officer in just 5 steps (nothing more needed).

  1. So, first of all you have to be a LEADER:- Confused?? No worries. I am going to describe it. Here I am NOT talking about leadership to control or motivate others. Be the leader of your own Mind so that you and you only can take ownership to control it, and no other thoughts. Because now you are ready to take off (start upfront), keep one thing in mind you are now the pilot of your aircraft (MIND) which will fly to your DREAMLAND (you are an Officer).
  2. Make your MAP:- You should not create a MAP according to which you should proceed. Create a worksheet. Set calendar alerts, phone alerts, put post-its up, and make a big white board to do list for the month. Schedule your steps into your life.
Want To Be An Officer In Armed Forces? BE A LEADER FIRST
  3. Go through the websites of the Armed Forces:- Visit the websites daily, if not every alternate day to check for new updates of upcoming advertisements related to vacancies. Also, be in continuous touch with the newspapers, articles of repute and the daily news as to know what’s happening day in and day out globally.
  4. Keep yourself focused:- There will be many distractions all around, but don’t get demotivated anytime. Remember one thing a FOCUSED mind never get distracted of smaller things that goes on every day and night. Get the books related to the exams and the SSB and keep in touch with those as they are your friends from now onwards. Frame your mind and REVISE. PRACTICE, REVISE as much as you can.
  5. Keep yourself healthy and fit:- Remember one thing a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Practice yoga and schedule sometime in the morning to go out and exercise. This will surely help you during the SSB.

Keep following these steps everyday and I am sure you will get to visit your DREAMLAND in the days to come. Wishing all of you the very best of success.
REMEMBER:- YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW, NO ONE ELSE.

Recommended In Technical Graduate Course TGC 119

0

I applied for Technical Graduate Course 119 and got a SSB call very soon. I went for the interview scheduled at Selection Centre South, Bangalore. On the reporting day there were 303 candidates who had come for the interview. After documentation we were asked to be prepared for the screening test to be held the following morning. I appeared for the screening test and did well in the intelligence test and PPDT. Eventually I was screened in along with 29 other candidates.
The next day we had Psychology tests followed by my interview which was scheduled to be held on the same day. I did the tests well and followed my basic instincts and kept track of time so that I attempted most of the questions. The coaching I underwent at Shankar’s SSB Academy, Salem along with the valuable ideas and advice given to me by Lt.Col. (Retd.) P. Balasubramanian helped me in a very special way to answer all the situations and pictures in the most straightforward and honest manner.
The interview lasted for about 25 minutes to which I gave honest replies due to the introspection that was achieved during the several mock interviews conducted at Shankar’s SSB Academy, Salem. I was able to speak confidently and express my thoughts in a clear and vivid manner. There were two officers present during my interview but I was questioned by only the interviewing officer.
The next day we had the GTO tests in which I participated well and gave good ideas and help to my group whenever needed. I spoke well during the lecturette and was appreciated by my group. I was given a tough task to solve during my command task which I was able to do comfortably well due to my previous experience at doing various PGT’s, HGT’s and obstacles during my coaching at Shankar’s SSB Academy.

Indian Military Academy Officers

The last day was the day of conference and I was confident that I would get selected this time. During my conference I was asked about my stay and experience at the SSB venue. The conference concluded and the results were declared. I was happy to find my chest number called out and I was extremely happy at the outcome of the interview.
This article on my SSB experience might be written a bit late but it gives me a sense of pride and gratitude to be writing this article as a Gentleman Cadet at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. The extensive and result oriented approach followed at Shankar’s SSB Academy along with the robust and lively interactions I had with Lt. Col. (Retd.) P. Balasubramanian definitely paved the way for my success. It helped me realize my strengths and develop on my weaknesses. I will be passing out of the academy as a Lieutenant in June 2015.Wishing all budding warriors and Shankar’s SSB Academy all the very best in this noble service to the nation.
Jai Hind.

The More I Am Facing Failure The More I Am Getting Motivated To Get Recommended

2

My story and my aspiration to be an officer in defence forces begun when I was child of just 11 year age and  join Sainik school Kunjpura an institution which prepares its students to fulfill their of joining armed forces. The environment of school itself is a training for its students but the ugly truth about the great institution is that out of the 100 students joining in class 6th a very few are able to join National defence academy and the reason varies.
I was also in the lucky lot of those ”A Very  few” who was recommended by SSB from 34 SSB Board Allahabad for air force flying branch. Hurray  now you may be thinking what a cute story of a boy who wanted to be a part of defence forces and he made it. I also thought in that way till the merit list for the course was announced and unfortunately I couldn’t get my joining letter for academy.

Here’s began the real struggle story of this boy who failed to clear the upcoming NDA written exam and couldn’t get call letter for SSB. Patience is the key to success and that’s what all I could revive  on. In-spite of failure I didn’t let my spirit and fire of becoming an officer die. I completed my graduation and believe me there wasn’t even a single day on which I haven’t thought of SSB. In the final year of graduation I applied for CDSE exam and I made through it. I was so happy to receive call letter for SSB and my hope of becoming officer seems to be alive but again I was mistaken.
Once again I went for SSB at Bhopal. A total of 82 cadets come for SSB and I was chest number 82. I was confident at screening test and attempt all process very confidently. It was time for screening results and my ears were eagerly waiting to hear chest no 82. The GTO announced ”and the last one we have” my heart was pounding in my chest ”chest no 38”. Oh what a great relief. After the screening, you all being aspirants are aware of the tests being conducted thereafter. Out of 38 candidates 5 were previously recommended. Really had a wonderful time with candidates from different parts of country.

The More I Am Facing Failure The More I Am Getting Motivated To Get Recommended

On 5th day it was time for conference. All went well as usual and now everyone was eagerly waiting for the results. The Major come in olive green dress and  gave the consolation speech as usual and after that announce the result. Only two out of 38 were recommended and rest all were staring at each other. Major broke the silence ” that’s all we have from this batch, better luck next time”. Out of two one was fresher and one was repeater. None of the 5 previously recommended was able to make it this time And I was also one of them.
With broken heart but with a good and memorable experience I come back. I gave my final year exams and came home. The failure at SSB filled me with zeal to make it again and very soon I got the opportunity. It was my SSB entry just two months after I got conference out.
It may be strange but i comply with my frustration of failure by workout daily. Again I went for Ssb and again I was in the same board from which I was conference out which creates a feeling of low confidence in me. This time unexpected thing happened and I was shocked to get screened out this time.
After coming back I took admission in MA ENGLISH at Punjab university and started waiting for next opportunity. I got that in my next ncc entry which was scheduled to be on January 2015.
This time I went to 34 SSB Allahabad, the board from which I was recommended but again after giving my 100 per cent I screened out.
The more I am facing failure the more I am getting motivated to get recommended.
Now I am waiting for the CDSE results which will be announced soon and I hope to make it in the written exam.
I just wanted to tell you all aspirants that we are not failure till the time we accept it by mind and soul and quit. Always remember:
Once you start working on something, don’t be afraid of failure and don’t abandon it.
Sometimes those who quit aren’t even aware of the fact that how close they were to their aim.
Failure is part of life and it adds flavour to our success because the taste  of success after failure is indescribable. I would like to sum up only by writing that lets everyone come forward and take a pledge not to quit no matter how many time we face failure.
Good luck

Trust Your Preparation and Selection Process!

5
Trust Your Preparation and Selection Process

Its been a year since I blogged this website! You can read my last article – Recommended for Army, Navy and Air Force. I am happy to see so many topics posted everyday which directly or indirectly help the defence aspirants. One must be pretty clear that what makes the difference between an officer of the armed forces from the rest.

THE DIFFERENCE
It is that the ability and power to command the men under you. Those men are ready to lay down their lives for you, the unit and ultimately the nation.
It is now, for the coming generations a tough decision in what to make a career – in the software, management, medical, space, business, teaching, civil services or the armed forces. If you really love and determined to do something, without any second thought go for it. Anybody may get motivated to join the forces at any time. If is it so, the goal is not so far.
As stated in my earlier articles, you really need not be a super hero to join this elite profession, It is that you become the simplest man but with heroic skills you never imagined and that is only after the training and it is the responsibility of the training academies. You will be the survivor of your own.
ARMY NAVY OR AIRFORCE??
Now it is a question mark whether it is the Indian Air force, the Navy or the Army. As told, love something.. If you have a passion for flying and soaring the skies, None can match the Air force. If it is the waters and adventures which amaze you, then its the Navy. If it is the combo of the above along with the spirit to command and the will to fight, then it is the Army. But ultimately, whatever u choose, you are all under one roof. The Indian government gives the privilege of setting a class one gazetted officer status at the age of 21 or 22 years approx only for the officers in the Armed forces.

IMA

A SMALL TRUTH !
For those who think that after joining this profession, there is nothing to study but only perks. It is a perfect Myth!
There is a lot to study and your progress depends on how you perform! So exam fever will be a common occurrence in your life 😉
Now to make all these come true, except a few, many of us feel the greatest hurdle as the SSB.
Again, love your selection process! Where else in the world will the government spend 5 days in selecting a potential candidate?
HAVE NO DOUBTS IN THE FOLLOWING THINGS

  1. Preparing adequately and knowing what SSB does.
  2. Approaching any officer for help and guidance.
  3. Home work on your communication skills, basic aptitude.
  4. Updating oneself with current affairs and general awareness.
  5. Be an organiser of any event in your school/college. You will come to know what is the level of effort needed to make it happen.
  6. Social interactions and mingling with your new set of friends.
  7. Sense of dressing, behaviour, walking, handling things – smarter.
  8. Take up any responsibility or appointment in your institution, thus taking initiatives in doing any task.

Finally, I won’t mention them as NR s or conference out .. I would rather tell, for those whose success is delayed, learn from your past.
After each attempt you give, introspect. Spend time in writing your full experience, how did u perform in each test, where were you stuck up, at which point were u blank out in interview, why did you stammer in lecture and GD, which thing you felt as difficult to attempt, what can be the remedies. Combine all these with all other’s experiences too. Before going for the next attempt, read all your experiences and be careful on what  to do and what not to do. You will never commit any mistakes thereon. Jot down each and every question put to you in interview and conference, accept interviewing officer’s points, remember to improve it in the next attempt.
Remember, majority of us are judged only in the conference. So don’t take it lightly. Who knows, 20 seconds may decide the making of an officer.!
For those who are on the final lap, already waiting for merit n call letters, You are what you are. Perform your best. Don’t get injured during the training period nor get involved in any disciplinary grounds. Else the toil for achieving your dream may be doomed.
Dedicated to all aspirants and especially to my inspiration.

Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Mysore Experience

4
Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Mysore Experience

I was in my seventh semester of college and my friends and fellow classmates were all busy with their preparation for placements and higher studies, sitting with Aptitude books and preparing their resumes and SOPs. I somehow was not interested in both. I was always fascinated by planes and admired them when they flew above the sky. I spoke about my admiration of planes to a senior of mine who was then undergoing training with the Indian Air Force. I was inspired by his speech which had been like the beginning of my career. I applied for the Air Force Common Admission Test or AFCAT 2/2014. This entrance test happens twice a year which is the entry test for candidates willing to join the Air Force. The portions were quite a lot but the exam was easy. This test takes place at any of the Air Force Stations you have preferred in the application form. The test was for 2 hours and had 100 questions. I cleared the exam and was asked to report at one of the selection boards among Mysore, Varanasi, Dehradun and Gandhi Nagar. There were convenient dates and I chose to report at the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Mysore on the 15th of December.

The Mysore center was called ‘2 AFSB’. This selection procedure goes on for 6 days and is the same for Army, Navy and Coast Guard except that they call it SSB which means Service Selection Board.
DAY 1:
It was the 15th of December and I woke up at 5 so that I would report on time. The reporting time was 6:45 at the Railway Station. My father and I arrived there well before 6:30 only to see a bunch of girls like me, either with their parents or alone carrying huge luggage. Mine was a girls batch with 185+ people. There was a military truck to carry all our luggage and 2 buses to take us to the selection board. I hopped into one of these and bid my father goodbye. The selection board was 10 minutes from the station. I had already made friends with some girls in the bus. On arriving at the selection board, we were asked to deposit our mobile phones in a brown bag (They would return it only when going back). We were asked to proceed to a hall and asked to fill some forms for our Travelling Allowance (TA). Breakfast was provided to all 187 of us and the first test of the selection began. It was called Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test which had some verbal and non-verbal questions. We were given 35 minutes for 80 questions. After this, we were assigned chest numbers according to our date of birth from the youngest to the eldest. My no. was 9.
The second test was called the Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT).A hazy picture was shown to us and were asked to write a story within 4 minutes on whatever comes to our mind at that moment. We were then divided into groups of 15 and had to narrate our story to 3 testing officers. We then had to discuss our stories and come up with the best one within the stipulated time. We couldn’t finish the discussion though! Then lunch was provided and the results were announced after an hour. Only those who get selected here will stay on for the remaining 5 days and the rest had to go back. I was so thrilled to hear my number being called out. 72 of us were screened in and our documents were verified. My new chest number was 4. We filled up certain forms including the Personal Information Questionnaire(PIQ) which would we verified during our interview. We were allocated rooms (10 per room) in a building named ‘AASHIYANA’ which means comfortable stay. The stay was comfortable indeed!

2 afsb mysore experience

As we did not have our mobile phones, there was a phone booth with 2 phones for 72 people! There were 4 computers for browsing and we had to stand in big queues waiting for our turns to inform our parents. The stay and food were for free. The mess was named ‘TRUPTI’ which means satisfied! The mess had huge photos of MiGs, Sukhois and the Air Force Academy. There was also a big poster on the history of the IAF with pictures of various aircrafts during each war. Even if one had come there by compulsion, I’m sure they would have been truly inspired by the way things are organized there.
The selection board campus was very clean and there were placards everywhere with motivational quotes. There was a recreation room with Carrom, Table Tennis, Chess, TV, etc. The person in-charge was Wing Commander Krishna. He was one of the nicest persons I’ve ever seen. He attends to each and every one of us at all times with care. Dinner was at 8 PM and we had our roll call at 9. He was there right on time and enquired about the food and arrangements.
DAY 2:
We were woken up by the speakers in every room playing ‘Vande Maataram’ and other patriotic songs. It was hard for me to wake up at 5 in that cold Mysore weather. Bed tea/coffee was served at 5:30 and breakfast was at 6:30. We were to assemble for our roll call in front of the Aashiyana building at 7:10 and report to the testing center at 7:15. This procedure was followed for all the 6 days. I had my Pilot Aptitude Battery Test(PABT) that morning as I had applied for the Flying Branch of the IAF. To become a pilot with the Air Force, one has to take this test compulsorily. This is once-in-a-lifetime test and its result is valid throughout our career. Girls who did not take up flying branch had the morning off. The test had 2 parts- Written and Simulator. Only those who clear the written part were qualified to appear for the Flight Simulator. I gave my best to clear the written part. The result of the simulator test was announced only on the final day.
After lunch, all 72 of us were present in the testing hall for Psychological Tests. The first test was Thematic Apperception Test(TAT) where 12 slides of pictures were shown one after the other for 30 seconds each and we were asked to write a story for 4 minutes. The next was Word Association Test(WAT), where, 60 wordds are displayed for 15 seconds each and we were asked to make sentences using each word. The test that followed was Situation Reaction Test(SRT). 60 situations were given for a time of 30 minutes and we were asked to react to those. The last test was Self-Description Test(SDT) and we were asked to describe ourselves from our parents, teachers and friends’ point of view and also what we wanted to be in the future. The time alloted was 10 minutes. After these tests, we went back to our hostel.
There was a ‘motivation room’ which contained books-both fiction and defence books, newspapers, magazines, a fish tank, ranks and badges of the officers, aircraft models, posters, pictures of the Air Chief Marshals, etc. I used to spend some time there and discuss the current issues with my friends there.
DAY 3:
We were divided into groups of 9 and were dressed in white for our Group Task(GT). We proceeded to the GT ground at 7:15 in the morning instead of the testing hall. Only 4 groups had their GT that day and the remaining girls either had interview or were free. Our Group Testing Officer(GTO) was Wing Commander Bharat. Our first test was the Group Discussion(GD). 2 topics were given and we spoke for 5 minutes on each topic. After the GD was the Group Planning Exercise(GPE). A situation was given along with the model of a village and we had to write down the solution for it. We were then asked to combine all our ideas and come up with the best solution.
After the Indoor activities, the first Outdoor activity was the Progressive Group Task(PGT). There was a start line and a finish line and we were given helping materials like a rope, plank, etc and were asked to bridge some structures in between and use them to reach the finish line. The allocated time was 45 minutes. Next was Half-Group Task(HGT) which had the same procedure as PGT with half the number of people. The next race was called Snake Race and we had to cross 6 obstacles like jumping on a wall, passing through a hanging tyre, etc carrying a huge snake-like object. We competed with other groups and each group had a war-cry. Ours was ‘Vande Maataram’ and we came 2nd. The main aim of the race was not to win it but to see how we help others in the group and assist them.
The last test was the Lecturette. We had to choose a topic among 4, prepare for 3 minutes and give a speech for another 3 minutes. We were so tired after this long day and went back to our hostel.
DAY 4:
The fourth day started again with GT but this time it was not a group task but individual ones. The first test was called Command Task(CT). One person has to command 2 helpers and complete a particular physical task and reach the finish line. Our GTO was very friendly and even if we did not come up with a solution, he helped us. The final physical task was the Individual Obstacles. We had to finish 7 tasks in 3 minutes which included climbing on a ramp, walking on a rope, monkey-crawling, rope-climbing, etc.
After 2, we were allowed to go outside but report back before 8 in the night. A group of 15 of us went to the Mysore Palace and to the Garuda Mall that day.
DAY 5:
Many of the girls were free that day but I had my Personal Interview(PI). My interview went on for 45-50 minutes and was more of an informal one. The Interviewing Officer(IO) was friendly and calm and listened patiently to all my answers.
That day again, 13 of us went out to an exhibition nearby. It was an amazing experience to go on rides and to eat the roadside food there. We came back before 8 and had our dinner. This was our last night in the selection board together and we made a plan to celebrate. A group of 20 of us went to the recreation room and started dancing to Bollywood music! Since most of the girls were from the north, I taught them tamil folk dance and they loved it!
DAY 6:
This was our final day and after the conference, the results were to be announced. We packed our bags and went for the conference. This was another informal meeting with all the Selection Board members(about 20 officers). It was for less than 2 minutes and then we waited in the testing hall.
The PABT results were announced first and I cleared it! I was so very happy. The Wing Commander then started announcing the ‘Recommended’ candidates and my number was called out first! I was crying with joy. 7 were selected from a total of 187. I was proud of myself! My friends were there to encourage me eventhough they did not make it. They promised they would come back next time and join me. I was so happy to convey this message to my parents after 7 odd hours of document-filling! I stayed in the selection board along with the other 6 recommended candidates.
The next morning, we were dropped at the railway station and our mobile phones were returned to us, finally! I was so very glad I made it and filled with excitement, that, I spoke over phone to my friends and family for over 7 hours, telling them the entire story!
Overall, this AFSB was one hell of an expeerience! I made new friends, learned a new language, learned about planes, learned about punctuality, learned about discipline and lastly, learned that failure is not the end of the world and that I will never give up. I thank everyone for being supportive. There were people there who got recommended on their 13th attempt! So keep trying, stay confident and stay focussed. I’m still left with my Medical test which confirms my selection for the Indian Air Force. So, fingers crossed! 🙂
