Like Father Like Daughter: Miss Ann Rose joins NDA like her father

Ann Rose Mathew hails from Kerala and is on the final selection list of the National Defense Academy (NDA), the joint defence service training institution of the Indian Armed Forces.

Ann Rose Mathew from Kochi was ranked 52nd overall (7th among female candidates). She received a call letter to join NDA at Khadakwasla on August 6. About 1.77 lakhs female candidates took part in the November 2021 exam, but only 19 were given to women (10 in the Army, 6 in the Air Force, and 3 in the Navy are selected in the final list).

The final list was announced by UPSC on June 14th. 443 men made the list which features 51 girls.

“It was always a dream for me to get into defense. So when I came to know of this opportunity, I immediately applied,“ she says.

A native of Manantabadi and living in Kochi, Ann is the daughter of Naval Officer Commander Matthew, who is stationed at the Southern Naval Headquarters in Kochi. Her mother (later) Veena Matthew was a faculty member at Edapary’s Teacher Training Institute.

She is in her first year of BTech at Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara. Matthew graduated from class XII in 2021 with 98.6% grades. She said it was her dream. Bina died of cancer in April.

“I grew up with my father in uniform and he is my inspiration. It was also my mother’s dream. I passed the exam and the SSB interview before she left us. But, she couldn’t see me in uniform. Preparing for the engineering entrance exam helped me pass the NDA exam,” she said.

She decided to join the NDA Academy and chose to join the army.

As per the National Defence Academy NDA 2 2021 merit list on 14th June 2022, which features 51 girls for 19 available seats in the Academy.

The weightlifter brilliantly won the gold medal after setting a new game record in his event. However, his road to fame was not easy.

His father, who died in 2013, worked as a van driver. Due to her poor financial situation, his mother also started working.

His older brother, Alok, 28, who introduced Acinta to the world of weightlifting, sacrificed his own dreams to take odd jobs to support his family.

“Despite our terms, we did not stop supporting him Achinta. We did everything we could to help him develop as a weightlifter. He had great potential as evidenced by his past successes. I subscribed to a pay sports channel [on Sundays] to see how he won medals,” Arok, who also helped his mother with his embroidery work with Achintia, told the newspaper. Achintya started training in weightlifting with local trainer Ashtam Das. He spotted Blake after placing fourth in the youth division of the 2014 National Championships, attracting the attention of coaches from the Army Sports Institute, who offered the boy a spot at their base in Pune.

Thanks to three good meals a day, Acinta grew physically and made a name for herself in sports. He won the silver medal at the Asian Youth Championships in 2018 and the gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships the following year. In 2021, he became the first Indian man to stand on the podium at the World Junior Championships after winning a silver medal. His sporting success has also led him to be offered the position of Havaldar in the Indian Armed Forces, giving him an Economic burden that has been reduced.

Das, who trains local talent for free, was visibly happy with Achinta’s success. “He started his apprenticeship under my umbrella in 2011. Like his brother, he had a lot of potential. He was determined, focused and energetic. I am very happy to see him win an important medal today. The 2024 Olympics should be his goal now,” Das said.

Before that, Acinta’s best performance was in the clean and jerk in 2021 when he weighed 173 kg and overall he weighed 316. It was when I set a new national record for kg. He also secured direct qualification for the 2022 Commonwealth Games by winning a gold medal at the Senior Commonwealth Championship. The results were derived from the IWF Senior World Championships.

Naib Subedar Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins India’s second gold at Commonwealth Games

Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga created history by capturing a gold medal with a record-breaking combined lift of 300 kg in men’s 67 kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Sunday.

With this, he won the country its fifth medal at CWG 2022 and second gold medal at the event. He had achieved a record-breaking 140 kg lift in the snatch category and 160 kg in the Clean and Jerk category, which combined to give him a lift of 300 kg, a record at the Commonwealth Games.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga successfully lifted 136 kg in his first Snatch attempt to move to the top of the leaderboard. Edidiong Joseph Umoafia was at second with 130 kg and Samoa’s Vaipava Ioane at third with 127 kg at the time of his first attempt.

Lalrinnunga set up a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 140 kg in his second Snatch attempt.

He tried to better this record by going for 143 kg in his final attempt but failed to do so. He finished the Snatch category with 140 kg, at the top of the table. Edidiong Joseph Umoafia was at second with 130 kg and Samoa’s Vaipava Ioane at third with 127 kg at the end of the Snatch event.

With the Indian at the lead position, proceedings moved to the Clean and Jerk category.
Ditto Titus Ika of Nauru gained an initial lead in the Clean and Jerk category and overall competition with a 135 kg C&J lift and combined lift of 240 kg. Ruben Katoatau of Kiribati took the lead further with combined lift of 250 kg, with 114 kg in Snatch and 136 kg in Clean and Jerk. The lead crossed 250-plus mark when England’s Jaswant Singh Shergill lifted 140 kg, taking his combined lift to 254 kg.

Nigeria’s Umoafia lifted 150 kg in the first attempt to take his combined lift to 280 kg. Jeremy now had to lift 154 kg in his first attempt to match the Nigerian, which he did successfully. With this, he set a new CWG record and brought himself to the lead in the overall competition with a combined lift of 294 kg.

In his second C&J attempt, Jeremy lifted 160 kg to take the lead with a combined lift of 300 kg. By lifting 300 kg combined, he had set another new CWG record.

In his final C&J attempt, Jeremy decided to lift 165 kg but he failed. Nonetheless, his combined lift stayed at 300 kg and was not matched by any other opponent.

Jeremy ended up adding the fifth medal to India’s tally by capturing a gold medal. It was India’s second at 2022 CWG after Mirabai Chanu’s gold in weightlifting women’s 49 kg category.

Vaipava Ioane of Samoa gained the silver medal with a combined lift of 293 kg, consisting of 127 kg in Snatch and 166 kg in C&J. Bronze medal went to Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia, who had the combined lift of 290 kg. He had lifted 130 in the Snatch category while he attained a best of 160 kg in C&J.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Wing Commander Mohit Rana, who died after a twin-seater MiG-21 aircraft of the IAF crashed in Barmer district of Rajasthan on Thursday, at the cremation ground in Sector 25 here on Saturday.

With moist eyes, family, friends and colleagues bid final farewell to Rana, who’s mortal remains reached his home in Mullanpur earlier in the day. Before the cremation, his wife Nidhi and their three-year-old daughter paid floral tribute to him. His two sisters tied Rakhi on the mortal remains. His wife and cousin lit the pyre.

His father Lt Col O P Rana (retd) said he came to know about the death of his son around 12 midnight on Friday through his daughter-in-law. Rana, a native of Mandi district of HP, said he had a happy family, his son had celebrated his birthday on July 23, but now everything was lost.

How To Beat Nervousness in SSB Interview Screening Test

SSB Interview Screening test is the very first thing where you have to face the board people and your group mates. Also, you have the pressure of performing well in Screening because your entire testing further depends on passing this test. Since screening is so important it’s quite natural to get nervous during your screening. Especially in Picture Perception and Discussion Test.

Screening is a stressful exercise where you are to face a large number of people at one go. Many of you who have not been much into extra-curricular and on stage will be even more nervous sometimes. So here are a few points which you should keep in mind to beat the nervousness and tension during Screening.

  1. Practice will make you confident: Be it OIR or be it story writing or even Discussion, you can beat the tension by practicing hard, and you must start immediately! You can practice for OIR from some good Reasoning books. For PPDT you have to make an extra effort, look for PPDT exercises on our websites or in SSB books, you can even imagine a random scene and write a story on that following the guidelines. Now imagine few people around you, or make your friends or family sit around you, sit erect on a chair and tell them the story. You can even have a discussion over it. This way you’ll feel confident.
  2. Take a break: When you are done with writing your story you are provided with a break of 5-10 minutes and then you are proceded for the discussion. So utilize that break, take deep breath and keep on revising your story in your mind. This is a great confidence booster and also prepares you to speak.
  3. Make friends: You get ample of time while being directed from one place to another. So in that time talk to your group mates, you’ll feel much better after that because then you’ll not be amongst complete strangers.
  4. We are all the same: That girl in the formal attire or that boy who is in polished shiny shoes and excellent formal tie might be as nervous as you are. Your pair of jeans or sneakers don’t make you stand out! When you’ll talk to other candidates then you’ll realize that they are also at the same stage where you are, hell nervous and super tensed. On learning this you’ll feel much much better. So take it from me now only that 98% of people in SSB will be nervous, so relax and take a chill pill.
  5. Attitude Matters: Think all the time that you are there to be an officer. Do officers panic? Do they feel nervous? No! So show the attitude of what you are there for, being an officer, so feel like one. Think in your mind that it is easy, I’ll crack it, trust me when you’ll say this in your mind three times confidently, you’ll reduce your nervousness to a great extent.
  6. Dress Rehearsal:  Now some you might find it funny, especially boys who have this thinking that ‘kuch bhi pehen ke chala jaunga’ wala thinking. But hold on, it is better to spend a few minutes on thinking what to wear on screening rather than regretting it all together later. Screening is the first time when you are facing the board so you need to dress properly, your personality matters (of course wearing an Armani won’t help if you don’t utter a word in PPDT). So wear a neat decent dress, no need to put something you are not comfortable into. Wear something you are comfortable with because you have to be in the dress for a long period of time.
  7. Walk confidently and have a smile on your face: You must walk with full confidence, sit in a good posture and maintain a smile. Do not look unduly nervous or tensed. If you are having this then surely you’ll feel better inside and look confident from outside.

Practice makes everybody better. SO keep on following these things and you’ll surely be confident and tension free on the day of screening.
