Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth on Wednesday became the first woman fighter pilot to be qualified to undertake missions by day on a fighter aircraft. She completed Day operational syllabus on Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 aircraft today. Notably, Kanth had joined fighter squadron in ‘2017 and flew the first solo on MiG-21 Bison in Mar 2018.’
Last year, Kanth became the second female pilot to fly a fighter jet solo. The first woman is Avani Chaturvedi. Kanth along with Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh were declared as the first combat pilots of the Indian Air Force. The historic event took place on June 18, 2016.
Today, IAF successfully fired the BrahMos air version missile from its frontline Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The launch from the aircraft was smooth and the missile followed the desired trajectory before directly hitting the land target. The air-launched BrahMos missile is a 2.5-ton supersonic air to surface cruise missile with ranges of close to 300 km, designed and developed by BAPL. The IAF became the first Air Force in the world to have successfully fired an air-launched 2.8 Mach surface attack missile of this category on a sea target on 22 Nov 17. Today’s was the second such live launch of the weapon. The integration of the weapon on the aircraft was a very complex process involving mechanical, electrical and software modifications on aircraft. The IAF has been involved in the activity from its inception. The software development of the aircraft was undertaken by the IAF engineers while HAL carried out mechanical and electrical modifications on the aircraft. The dedicated and synergetic efforts of the IAF, DRDO, BAPL and HAL have proven the capability of the nation to undertake such complex integrations.
The firing could be successfully undertaken with dedicated support from Indian Navy by way of ensuring the availability of a large number of monitoring ships to ensure range safety clearance. The BrahMos missile provides Indian Air Force with a much-desired capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target at sea or on land with pinpoint accuracy by day or night and in all weather conditions. The capability of the missile coupled with the superlative performance of the Su-30MKI aircraft gives the IAF the desired strategic reach.

The inquiry into the Budgam incident, in which a Mi-17 V-5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force crashed close to the Srinagar airfield on February 27, is believed to have revealed several violations of standard operating procedures. The probe will also look at why the Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) system — that is supposed to be on the helicopter — didn’t work. The inquiry into the incident — now being seen as a case of friendly fire — will shortly move to the next step of ‘summary of evidence’, in which more than one officer could potentially be charged with culpable homicide, not amounting to murder. On February 27, a Mi-17 V-5 chopper of the Srinagar-based 154 Helicopter Unit crashed within 10 minutes of taking off even as a dogfight raged over 100 km away between intruding Pakistani jets and the IAF, in which Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthamanwas involved. Six IAF personnel on board and a civilian on the ground had lost their lives in the crash.

According to multiple reports, a Court of Inquiry (CoI) in the matter has fixed the responsibility on the senior officials of the Srinagar Air Base for ‘violating the standard operating procedures’. The incident reportedly took place as the chopper came under a friendly fire as the Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) system on the chopper was switched off.
“Unprecedented as it might be, IAF leadership is clear that such lapses are not repeated,” Hindustan Times quoted a senior defence ministry official as saying.
According to the HT report, the CoI has found out a number of lapses in the SoPs. For instance, when the engagement between IAF and PAF jets ensued, the chopper should have been sent to a safer location meant for friendly aircraft. Instead, the chopper reportedly continued to fly without being identifiable, thus falling prey to the air defence platforms.
Hey future officers, I am Sepoy Muni, I got recommended from 11 SSB Allahabad for ACC 119 in my second attempt. I want to share a few most important lines before explaining my SSB experience. Honesty never fails, confident and cheerfulness comes by your preparations. I was screened out in my 1st attempt and that’s where I felt the real pain of failure and as well as the spark of my success. I would like to thank SSBCrack for motivating me many success stories of different people. Now I reported at the centre on the 2nd of March. The next day was screening day and I had prepared well for my OIR with a help of SSBCRACK’ S Ebooks and R.S Agarwal book and that helped to score more than 90 out of 100.
In PPDT I observed all the instructions, changed negative situations to a positive and a simple story. Before entering the test hall I myself narrated the story for more than 20 times. During narration I was courageous and confident, so my group nominated me to give the story of my group. I was pretty sure about my screening.. we 39 got the screening in – out of 108 candidates.

The next day happened my psych test and personal interview. In psych test I had put my self in all the pictures and made simple stories with adequate actions. I completed all 60 WAT and 39 SRT questions. My interview took 45 to 50 min. I answered the questions with full confidence. My request to all of you is to analyse yourself and follow that in an honest way.
My GTO was very joyful. I gave ideas and chance to others too. I was not stressed by my accessors, but I was total with my group. My conference went 2 to 3 min where I was asked a very normal question. Finally, I got a positive result…Here I want to thank col MP sir who guided me till the end of my SSB. Only you and your hard work decide your success. Thanks a lot.
