What Is An Anti-Radiation Missile And Why INDIA Needs Such Warheads?

With hike in indigenisation trend in India, defence manufacturing authorities have shown a great move by producing Anti-Radiation missile. Currently, this technology is owned by a few nations like Germany, US, Brazil, Russia, etc.…. Being a hot topic of news, all SSB aspirants must go through some key points of this missile which are as follows:-

  1. The Anti-radiation missile trials to take place from Su-30 by the end of this year.
  2. It is state of art anti-radiation missile indigenously developed by India.
  3. Trials will be conducted by DRDO technologists.
  4. It is developed by DRDL (Defence Research Development Laboratory)
  5. Made to target air defence capabilities of enemy to crack their backbone by destroying radars and communication systems.
  6. It detects the signals of communication systems and radars, locks target over them and follows the signal flow to track the target.
  7. Its Range varies from 100-125 Kms.
  8. As per sources, it will be installed over Su-30 and India’s indigenous aircraft, Tejas.
  9. Uses dual pulse population system (like LR-SAM), which could be added to other air-to-surface and air-to-air missiles.
  10. Its induction into Army will be done after clearing all development trails and expected to be inducted after two years.Anti-Radiation Missile India

The most awaited LR-SAM (Barak-8 missile), which is jointly developed by initial and Israel, is also expected to be inducted at the end of this year. Not only this, India has recently tested indigenously developed, nuclear capable ballistic missile – Prithvi 2 from mobile launchers. It was not the first test of the missile. The missile was first test fired in 1996 and was inducted in Indian army in 2006. The recent trial was a training trail to check and specify the readiness of the Armed Forces. Last trail was conducted on 26 November 2015. Some key facts about Prithvi-2 missile are as follows.

  • Can carry 500-1000 kgs of warheads
  • The missile has a range of 350 kms
  • It was the first missile developed by DRDO under project Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP)
  • Composed of Single Stage liquid fuel dual motor engine
  • Shorter than Prithvi-1 in length

Why defence manufacturing has escalated in India and why India need such war heads?

The missile competition has escalated these days with the increase in military activities in Asian nations. With the deployment of artillery warheads by China on disputed islands in South China Sea, military gearing up was observed in the area. China has supported Pakistan to develop missiles, whereas India was supported by US to manufacture Prithvi 2 missiles in 1990s. But the sale of F-16s by US to Pakistan has made Indo-US relation sour. India’s protest to stop this deal seemed to be result less and US diplomats went ahead to stamp the deal with Pakistan. India’s concern is about terrorist crowd in Pakistan and growing Taliban shadow in Afghanistan, which is slowing getting out of US forces. While china’s helping hand to Pakistan (submarines, port building, Karakorum highway, etc.) is also cementing Pakistan’s military muscles.  Further, keeping eye on military preparations of neighbours, India has to be strong and self-relent in defence sector.
