ROK Navy Receives Delivery of New Aegis Destroyer 'Jeongjo the Great'

The Republic of Korea Navy has officially received its latest 8,200-ton Aegis destroyer, named โ€œJeongjo the Great,โ€ from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The delivery ceremony attracted representatives from seven countries, including notable defense partners such as the United States, Poland, and Peru. This international presence highlights the ongoing defense collaborations, with Poland having recently acquired battle tanks and howitzers, while Peru has established new defense agreements with South Korea.

During the event, attendees witnessed the unveiling of the Chungnam-class (FFX-III) frigate, which is also scheduled for delivery to the South Korean Navy within the month. Joo Won Ho, Head of Naval and Special Ships at Hyundai Heavy Industries, expressed pride in the successful delivery, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with various affiliated organizations, including the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD). He reaffirmed HHIโ€™s dedication to enhancing Koreaโ€™s defense exports through coordinated teamwork with governmental entities.

The โ€œJeongjo the Greatโ€ marks the fourth Aegis destroyer constructed for the ROK Navy, following the signing of the initial building contract in 2019. The shipโ€™s construction commenced in 2021 and it was launched in 2022. Extensive testing confirmed the effective integration of the Aegis combat management systemโ€”acquired from the USโ€”with components manufactured in South Korea.

Equipped with advanced technologies, the destroyer features a sophisticated integrated sonar system developed by HHI, multi-function phased array radar, and Koreaโ€™s vertical launch system (VLS-II), alongside an MH-60R maritime operation helicopter. Notably, the vessel employs two Hybrid Electric Drives in addition to its four existing gas turbine engines, enhancing its operational capabilities.

With its advanced capabilities, the โ€œJeongjo the Greatโ€ is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering the ROK Navyโ€™s maritime defense strategy, particularly as a key component of the countryโ€™s proactive three-axis system designed to counter North Koreaโ€™s nuclear and missile threats. Looking ahead, the South Korean Navy is set to launch its second Aegis destroyer in 2025, while construction for a third destroyer officially commenced in October, signaling ongoing advancements in the nationโ€™s naval capabilities.
