CDS General Anil Chauhan and UAE Naval Chief Discuss Maritime Security and Joint Collaboration

India, UAE Deepen Defence Ties in High-Level Military Dialogue.

India and the United Arab Emirates took a significant step toward strengthening defence cooperation with a high-level meeting between General Anil Chauhan, India’s Chief of Defence Staff, and Major General Humaid Mohammed Abdullah Al Rumaithi, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces. The meeting, held in New Delhi, reflected the growing strategic alignment between the two nations.

The talks centred around enhancing maritime security, conducting more joint training exercises, and deepening interoperability between the Indian and UAE armed forces.

General Chauhan emphasized India’s commitment to a secure and stable maritime environment in the Indian Ocean Region, an area of increasing geostrategic importance. Major General Al Rumaithi expressed interest in expanding naval engagement and exploring cooperation in advanced defence technologies and joint production.

The timing of the visit coincides with escalating maritime insecurity in the Red Sea, where Houthi rebel attacks on cargo vessels continue to disrupt commercial shipping. The incident involving the ship Eternity underscores the urgency of coordinated maritime responses, further highlighting the relevance of such bilateral defence engagements.

Both military leaders reiterated a shared commitment to upholding a rules-based international order and ensuring the safety of critical sea lanes. This meeting follows up on earlier bilateral pledges made during a virtual summit, where India and the UAE agreed to intensify efforts against terrorism and bolster maritime cooperation.

The dialogue also signalled interest in future collaborations in defence research and development, production partnerships, and regional security initiatives—solidifying the India-UAE relationship as a comprehensive strategic partnership rooted in mutual trust and shared security interests.
