Maj Gen VS Deshpande Reviews Operational Preparedness in ArunachalPradesh

GOC of the Dao Division visits forward posts, pays homage at Nyukmadong War Memorial.

Major General VS Deshpande, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dao Division under the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, conducted a comprehensive review of operational preparedness during his recent visit to frontline formations in Arunachal Pradesh. The inspection highlights the Army’s continuing emphasis on combat readiness in one of the country’s most strategically sensitive regions.

Maj Gen Deshpande evaluated troop morale, logistical capability, and the operational effectiveness of units deployed along the eastern Himalayan frontier. The review focused on readiness in high-altitude terrain, where weather and topography present constant challenges to mobility and defense operations. His interaction with troops reflected a strong endorsement of their professionalism and commitment.

A key moment during the visit was the GOC’s tribute at the Nyukmadong War Memorial, a solemn site commemorating the valiant Indian soldiers who fought during the Battle of 1962. The memorial, perched above the Tawang–Bomdila route, serves as a powerful reminder of past sacrifices and the strategic imperatives that continue to drive India’s military posture in the region.

The visit comes at a time of heightened border vigilance and follows Maj Gen Deshpande’s recent meeting with Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (retd) on July 13. Their discussions touched upon border management, welfare initiatives under the Army’s Sadbhavana programme, and the role of civil-military cooperation in the Vibrant Village Programme—a development-focused scheme aimed at fortifying border communities.

The Spear Corps plays a vital role in India’s northeastern defense strategy, with specialized units like the Arunachal Scouts—raised in the aftermath of past incursions—providing crucial terrain and cultural familiarity in border surveillance and defense. The Army’s presence in Arunachal Pradesh, supported by an experienced officer cadre, remains integral to securing India’s sovereignty amid evolving regional threats.

The GOC’s review reaffirms the Army’s resolve to remain vigilant and adaptive in the face of continued Chinese assertiveness and complex border dynamics in the eastern sector.
