The Indian Air Force is carrying out extensive Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in Uttarakhand after landslides and flash floods ravaged the state on August 8. Air Marshal B Manikantan, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command, reviewed the relief efforts at Chinyalosour in Dharasu and joined a mission to Harsil and Dharali to boost the morale of teams on the ground.

Triggered by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts, the disaster has left hundreds stranded and caused widespread destruction. The IAF, working alongside the NDRF, Indian Army, Border Roads Organisation and local administration, has deployed helicopters, drones and ground-penetrating radar to locate survivors and assess damage in remote areas.

By August 9, 816 civilians had been evacuated and 1.4 tonnes of essential supplies delivered to affected regions. Mi-17 helicopters have been crucial in accessing cut-off villages, with experts noting that air deployment in mountainous areas can reduce rescue times by up to 40 percent.

Air Marshal Manikantan praised the teamwork and resilience of all agencies involved, reaffirming the IAF’s commitment to providing swift and sustained assistance. The Central Air Command remains on high alert to support ongoing missions as the state works to restore communication lines, deliver medical aid and rebuild damaged infrastructure.
