Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has said that Indiaโs long-range precision strikes during the May cross-border hostilities delivered a โhuge psychological impactโ on Pakistan, marking a decisive moment in modern conflict. Speaking at the inaugural Annual Trident Lecture Series organised by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies, he confirmed that Operation Sindoor is still underway and underscored the role of rapid, targeted action in shaping future warfare.
Highlighting the changing nature of armed conflict, General Chauhan explained that modern wars are no longer about territorial gains or capturing prisoners. โThere were very long-range precision strikes at selected targets. The physical damage was limited, but the psychological impact was significant. We demonstrated the ability to strike deep with precision, displaying sophistication and superiority,โ he said.
Describing this transformation as โthe matrix of victory,โ the CDS noted that military dominance is now measured by impact and effect rather than land acquisition. โIt has nothing to do with territory. This is how domination is changing,โ he emphasised, suggesting that Indiaโs approach is aligned with global trends towards short, high-intensity operations.
He also pointed to the governmentโs โnew normsโ for defence, calling for Indiaโs armed forces to maintain a โvery high orderโ of operational readiness at all times. This readiness, he said, is essential to deter and respond swiftly to emerging threats.
Issuing a stern warning to Pakistan, General Chauhan declared that cross-border terrorism will be met with decisive action and that militants can no longer expect safe havens across the border. His remarks reinforce Indiaโs commitment to proactive and precise military responses to safeguard national security.
