Lt General Mohit Wadha, Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s Western Command, visited Patiala on Wednesday to review the ongoing Agniveer Recruitment Rally. Organized by the Zonal Recruiting Office (ZRO) Jalandhar in coordination with the Kharga Corps, Airawat Division, and the local District Administration, the event has drawn thousands of youth eager to serve the nation under the Agnipath scheme.
The Agniveer recruitment model—launched in 2022—aims to induct approximately 46,000 young soldiers annually into the armed forces on a four-year tenure. The initiative reflects a significant shift from conventional long-term enlistment practices and is designed to infuse the military with a younger, technologically adept force.
During his visit, Lt General Wadha assessed the rally’s administrative and logistical arrangements, including digital registration systems and physical evaluation zones. He praised the seamless coordination between military units and civil authorities, crediting their combined efforts for ensuring a transparent, efficient, and fair recruitment process.
The Western Command, headquartered in Chandimandir, Haryana, is tasked with securing India’s western borders, particularly with Pakistan. Since its reconstitution in 1947, the Command has played a vital role in multiple military operations, including the 1971 war, and continues to be a cornerstone of India’s defence posture.
Lt Gen Wadha’s presence underscores the Army’s emphasis on transparency, professionalism, and youth engagement. The high turnout at the Patiala rally reflects rising interest among Indian youth in defence careers—a trend the Army sees as critical to maintaining readiness in a rapidly changing security landscape.
With over 43,000 officers currently serving, the Indian Army sees the Agnipath scheme as essential to reshaping its future force structure, blending youthful energy with operational excellence.
