In a critical show of leadership and operational oversight, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, conducted a high-level review of the counter-terrorism operations currently underway in South Kashmir. His visit comes as the security forces continue a major anti-terror operation in the dense Akhal forest area of Kulgam district, now in its seventh consecutive day. The encounter is one of the longest such engagements in the region in recent years.
The joint operation, involving the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding terrorist presence in the area. The forces have encountered fierce resistance, with continuous exchanges of gunfire and explosions reported. Officials suggest the operation may extend further due to the complex terrain and the suspected strength of the militant group.

During his visit to Devsar in Kulgam, Lieutenant General Sharma was given a detailed briefing on the ground situation, operational deployments, and real-time tactical developments. He praised the forces for their discipline, bravery, and commitment under difficult conditions.
The encounter highlights the Indian Army’s evolving strategies, particularly during the summer months when infiltration attempts typically rise due to melting snow along the Line of Control. The Akhal forest, known for its rugged and forested terrain, has added to the challenges faced by the joint forces, demanding high levels of coordination and endurance.

The Northern Command, which has overseen India’s borders with Pakistan and China since its re-establishment in 1972, continues to play a pivotal role in regional security. Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Sharma, the command is focused on countering cross-border threats, maintaining high-altitude readiness, and addressing internal security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir.

Experts believe the prolonged nature of this operation may signal the presence of heavily armed and trained militants, potentially linked to recent infiltration attempts. As the situation continues to develop, the security forces remain resolute in their mission to restore stability and ensure the safety of local communities.
