The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has set yet another milestone by constructing the world’s highest motorable road at an altitude of 19,400 feet at Mig La Pass in Leh district, Ladakh. This engineering marvel surpasses the organisation’s previous Guinness World Record at Umling La (19,024 feet).

The newly completed stretch is part of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road alignment and was inaugurated with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, Chief Engineer of Project Himank. The tricolour and BRO flags were unfurled at Mig La Pass, marking the historic achievement.

Strategic Significance

The road provides a third crucial route from Hanle to Fukche, a remote border village located near the India–China frontier. This enhanced connectivity will play a vital role in strengthening military logistics while also ensuring improved accessibility and development in the high-altitude region.

Record-Breaking Feat

BRO revealed that 11 of the world’s 14 highest motorable passes have been constructed by its teams, reaffirming its reputation as a pioneer in high-altitude road engineering. Beyond defence significance, the Mig La Pass is expected to become a new attraction for adventure travellers and tourists, offering breathtaking views of the Indus Valley and challenging terrains.

BRO’s Legacy of Achievements

Since its establishment in 1960 under the Ministry of Defence, BRO has been at the forefront of building strategic road networks in India’s border regions and in friendly neighbouring countries.

Some of its major achievements include:

  • Constructing over 60,000 km of roads and 1,000+ bridges in some of the toughest terrains.
  • Building the Atal Tunnel, the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, ensuring year-round connectivity to Ladakh.
  • Executing infrastructure projects in countries like Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
  • Providing critical support during natural disasters, aiding rescue and rehabilitation operations.

With the completion of this new high-altitude road, the BRO has once again showcased its unmatched engineering prowess and its unwavering commitment to strengthening India’s strategic preparedness while boosting development and tourism in remote Himalayan regions.
