In a remarkable achievement for India’s indigenous dog breeds, the Border Security Force’s (BSF) trained desi hound ‘Riya’ has created history by outperforming 116 foreign breeds to win two top honours ‘Best Tracker Trade Dog’ and ‘Dog of the Meet’ at the All India Police Duty Meet 2024 held in Lucknow. This marks the first time an Indian-bred dog has secured such a distinction at a national competition dominated by imported breeds.
The success comes as a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2018 initiative encouraging the inclusion of Indian dog breeds in the country’s security forces. Inspired by this vision, the BSF began a systematic programme at the National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD), Tekanpur, to train and breed indigenous dogs such as the Mudhol Hound and Rampur Hound. These breeds are now being deployed across India’s borders, in counter-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations, proving their effectiveness in diverse and challenging terrains.
Riya, a Mudhol Hound trained under BSF’s K9 programme, demonstrated exceptional tracking, endurance, and discipline during the event. Her victory underscores the growing recognition of Indian breeds for their agility, adaptability, disease resistance, and low maintenance qualities that make them ideal for India’s climatic and operational conditions.
Currently, more than 150 Indian-bred dogs are serving in various BSF units across strategic and sensitive zones. Their performance has significantly boosted confidence in India’s self-reliance drive and highlighted the potential of native breeds in national security operations.
To celebrate this indigenous excellence, a contingent of Indian dog breeds will participate in the upcoming National Unity Day Parade, symbolising India’s Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) spirit and pride in homegrown capabilities. A special K9 display showcasing their tactical and operational skills will also be held during the event.
The BSF’s continued efforts in breeding, training, and deploying Indian dogs stand as a testament to the nation’s commitment to promoting indigenous pride and operational independence a living embodiment of “Make in India” even in the realm of national security.
