In a landmark achievement that has set a new precedent in the 60-year history of the Border Security Force (BSF), Constable Shivani has become the first woman constable to be granted an out-of-turn promotion, accomplishing this remarkable feat within just five months of joining the force.
Breaking Barriers in the Force
Hailing from Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, Shivani’s journey is one of grit, humility, and hard work. The daughter of a carpenter and the first in her family to serve in any of India’s Central Armed Police Forces, Shivani has carved a name for herself through sheer determination. Posted with the 155 Battalion in Punjab, she stands as an inspiration to young women across the nation who dream of serving the country in uniform.
Reward for Sporting Excellence
The promotion was officially conferred by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary in New Delhi on Thursday. Shivani’s exceptional achievement — a silver medal at the 17th World Wushu Championship held in Brazil between August 31 and September 8, 2025 — earned her this rare recognition.
Her promotion to Head Constable comes under the provision for sportspersons who demonstrate exceptional performance at international levels, as defined by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
This milestone makes her only the second constable in 22 years to earn an early promotion in BSF history. In 2024, Constable Anuj from the Central Wushu Team was promoted after winning a silver medal at the 10th Sanda World Cup in Jiangyin, China.
DG Chawdhary on Encouragement and Excellence
DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary commended Shivani’s dedication and performance, calling her a “true embodiment of BSF’s fighting spirit and sporting excellence.”
“Promotions like these are not just rewards; they are powerful motivators. When a sportsperson brings glory at the international level, the entire force feels inspired. Shivani’s success will encourage many more to strive for such achievements,” the DG said.
He further explained that the BSF ensures its athletes receive world-class facilities, including expert coaching, physiotherapy, diet, and the latest sports infrastructure, enabling them to perform at their highest potential.
Shivani’s Words of Inspiration
Expressing gratitude after the ceremony, Head Constable Shivani said, “I joined the BSF on June 1, 2025, and today, just five months later, I’ve been promoted because of my performance at the World Championship. I train for four hours daily — two in the morning and two in the evening. My next goal is to win gold at the World Cup.”
Encouraging her peers, she added, “Work hard, stay disciplined, and keep faith in yourself. If I could achieve this in such a short time, anyone who gives their best can make it too.”
A Moment of Pride for BSF and India
Out-of-turn promotions in BSF are extremely rare and reserved for personnel who demonstrate extraordinary merit, bravery, or exceptional skill. Shivani’s recognition, achieved in just months, reflects the force’s evolving culture of honouring performance and nurturing its young talent.
The ceremony was a proud moment for the BSF fraternity — a symbol of empowerment, equality, and excellence.
With her medal gleaming and new rank pinned on her uniform, Shivani has not just earned a promotion — she has earned a place in the history books of India’s elite border force.
