Senior Indian Police Service officer Praveen Kumar today took over as the new Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP), succeeding Rahul Rasgotra, who retired after an illustrious tenure. The customary baton of leadership was formally handed over in a brief and dignified ceremony held at the ITBP Headquarters, marking a significant leadership transition for the elite border guarding force.
An IPS officer of the 1993 West Bengal cadre, Praveen Kumar brings with him a wealth of experience and strategic insight from a distinguished career spanning over 32 years. Before assuming charge of ITBP, he served as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s internal security framework.
Throughout his decorated service, Praveen Kumar has held several key positions both in his home cadre of West Bengal Police and the Intelligence Bureau, contributing significantly to national security and policing initiatives.
In recognition of his exemplary service and leadership, he has been honoured with numerous prestigious awards, including the Indian Police Medal (IPM), President’s Police Medal (PPM), Police (Special Duty) Medal, Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak, and the Asaadharan Aasuchana Kushalata Padak.
As the new Director General of ITBP, Praveen Kumar is set to lead the force known as the “Himveers” into a new chapter of operational excellence.
Tasked with safeguarding India’s sensitive borders along the Himalayas and ensuring high-altitude operational readiness, the ITBP continues to stand as a symbol of resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment to national security.
