The Indian Navy is set to commission Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the first to be based under the Southern Naval Command, in a formal ceremony at Naval Base, Kochi, on November 6, 2025. The event will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, Ikshak stands as a remarkable example of India’s growing self-reliance in shipbuilding. With over 80% indigenous content, the ship reflects the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and highlights strong collaboration between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The name ‘Ikshak’, meaning ‘Guide’ in Sanskrit, aptly symbolizes the ship’s purpose — to act as a sentinel of precision and direction in India’s maritime domain. The vessel is designed to conduct comprehensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, and navigational channels, generating critical data for safe navigation and maritime security.

Equipped for Excellence

Ikshak is fitted with cutting-edge hydrographic and oceanographic equipment, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). The vessel also features a helicopter deck, enhancing its operational versatility and enabling multi-domain missions.

A Symbol of Maritime Self-Reliance

The commissioning of Ikshak represents a significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s drive to strengthen its survey and charting infrastructure. As a platform of indigenous strength, technical excellence, and maritime stewardship, the ship will play a key role in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers and ensuring navigational safety in regional waters.

With the induction of Ikshak, the Indian Navy continues to chart a new course in hydrographic excellence, underscoring India’s commitment to technological innovation and maritime self-reliance.
