Air Marshal Samir Jayasinha Pendse has taken over as the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) of the Indian Air Forceโs Training Command with effect from 01 December 2025, marking a significant appointment in the IAFโs training and operational leadership structure.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Pendse was commissioned into the Flying (Pilot) branch of the Indian Air Force on 16 December 1989 as a helicopter pilot. Over a distinguished career spanning more than 36 years, he has logged over 5,100 hours of accident-free flying, reflecting his exceptional professionalism and flying expertise.
Throughout his service, the Air Officer has held a wide range of command and staff appointments. His leadership tenure includes command of two IAF bases, an Advance Headquarters, and a frontline helicopter unit. He also served on a United Nations Mission in Sudan, contributing to international peacekeeping and humanitarian operations.
A graduate of the National Defence College (NDC), Dhaka, Air Marshal Pendse most recently served as the Inspector General (Air) of the Border Security Force (BSF), overseeing the Aviation Arm of the MHA Air Wing and strengthening its operational efficiency.
In recognition of his gallantry and distinguished service, he has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 1997 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015 by the President of India.
His appointment as SASO, Training Command is expected to further enhance the IAFโs training ecosystem, operational preparedness, and the professional grooming of future air warriors.
