Air Marshal Yalla Umesh has officially taken over as the 39th Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Indian Air Force’s Maintenance Command, marking a major leadership transition within one of the IAF’s most critical operational support arms. He succeeds Air Marshal Vijay Kumar Garg, who superannuated on November 30 after 39 years of distinguished service.
Commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) Branch, Air Marshal Umesh is a ‘Category A’ aeronautical engineer with 37 years of service. He holds a Doctorate in Management and is an alumnus of both the College of Defence Management and the National Defence College—two premier institutions shaping senior military leadership.

Throughout his career, he has held several key engineering and command appointments across major combat, transport, and specialist fleets. His prominent roles include Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Engineering), Air Commodore Engineering (Transport), Chief Engineering Officer at a UN-operated airfield in DR Congo, and Air Officer Commanding of a Guided Weapon Base Repair Depot. Before assuming his new role, he served as the Director General (Aircraft) at Air Headquarters.
A recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal, Air Marshal Umesh is known for his contributions to maintenance innovation, fleet sustenance, and engineering reforms within the IAF.
His appointment as AOC-in-C is expected to further strengthen the Maintenance Command’s role in enhancing fleet availability, advancing indigenisation, and supporting the IAF’s vision for a technologically modern and self-reliant force.
