The Ashoka Chakra is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery or some act of daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the face of the enemy. Group Captain Shukla’s honour marks a rare instance where the award has been conferred for achievements in the domain of space research and international scientific collaboration.

In June 2025, Group Captain Shukla participated in the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private spaceflight organized by Axiom Space in partnership with NASA and SpaceX. As the mission pilot, he spent approximately 18 days aboard the ISS, conducting scientific experiments and representing India on a global stage. This mission made him the second Indian citizen to travel to space—following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984—and the first to board the International Space Station.
