Assistant Commandant Nishi Sharma Will Lead all-women Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Contingent

The all-women contingent under her command, supported by Assistant Commandant Apurva Gautam Hore, Assistant Commandant Lakshita, and Assistant Commandant Hardik, will demonstrate India's maritime vigilance along its vast coastline of over 11,000 kilometres.

Hailing from a family with a strong military heritage, Assistant Commandant Sharma is a second-generation defence professional. Her father and brother both serve in the Indian Army, providing her with early exposure to the principles of discipline, honour, and national duty. She received her foundational education at an Army Public School, which nurtured her affinity for uniformed service. She later pursued her undergraduate studies at Miranda House, University of Delhi, before commencing her career in the Indian Coast Guard.

In her professional tenure, Assistant Commandant Sharma has exhibited outstanding competence and leadership. She has served as an instructor at the renowned Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Ezhimala, Kerala, where she contributes significantly to the training and development of future officers in the naval and coast guard services. Her instructional role highlights her ability to mentor and inspire the next generation of maritime defenders.

The Indian Coast Guard has consistently led in empowering women officers with combat and leadership responsibilities, and this contingent exemplifies that tradition.

Assistant Commandant Sharma’s physical prowess and determination were recently evident when she claimed first place in the female category of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) Triathlon. This arduous competition, featuring 3.8 km of sea swimming, 180 km of cycling, and a 42.2 km marathon run, brought significant recognition to the Indian Coast Guard and affirmed her embodiment of Nari Shakti—the strength and resilience of women in uniform.

Assistant Commandant Nishi Sharma’s path—from a background steeped in military values to assuming command of a high-profile national contingent—serves as a compelling example of perseverance, sacrifice, and excellence.
