Colonel Karan Sandhu serves as the Commandant of 19 Assam Rifles, a key battalion of the Assam Rifles operating in the conflict-sensitive regions of Manipur. In an area marked by prolonged ethnic tensions and complex security dynamics, his leadership reflects a balanced approach—combining operational effectiveness with sustained community engagement to restore normalcy and trust.
The 19 Assam Rifles, which recently completed six decades of service since its raising in 1965, is deployed across strategically important districts such as Noney district, Kangpokpi district, and Churachandpur district, including the vital National Highway 37 corridor. These regions remain critical from both security and logistical perspectives, necessitating a constant presence of disciplined and responsive forces.
Under Colonel Sandhu’s command, the battalion has carried out extensive counter-insurgency operations and area domination tasks while simultaneously focusing on humanitarian initiatives aimed at improving everyday life for local communities. His leadership underscores the evolving role of security forces in the Northeast—not just as protectors, but also as facilitators of development.
One of the most impactful initiatives led by the unit took place on 21 February 2024 at the L. Hengjol Community Education Centre in Kangpokpi. Recognising the severe disruption to education caused by unrest, 19 Assam Rifles distributed more than 250 sets of textbooks to students from Classes 1 to 10. The unit also donated computer systems and printers, helping bridge the digital divide in an underserved region. During the event, Colonel Sandhu highlighted the importance of education as a long-term investment in peace and progress.
Continuing this focus on educational upliftment, Colonel Sandhu attended the inauguration of the Agape Friendship School on 29 January 2026 in Raenghzaeng village, Churachandpur district. The institution, catering to children from pre-nursery to Class VI, is expected to significantly reduce dropout rates and expand access to quality education in remote areas. The event saw participation from local leaders and stakeholders, reflecting the collaborative approach adopted by the Assam Rifles.

Beyond education, the battalion has undertaken several community development initiatives in remote villages such as Puichi in Noney and Aling Khundong in Tamenglong district. In collaboration with organisations like the Sunbird Trust, the unit has supported infrastructure development and distributed solar lighting systems, improving living conditions in areas with limited access to basic amenities.

While civic outreach remains a key focus, Colonel Sandhu ensures that the battalion’s operational readiness and military ethos remain uncompromised. The unit regularly conducts patrols, maintains area domination, and honours the legacy of fallen soldiers. On 29 March 2026, 19 Assam Rifles paid tribute to Rifleman Nabab Singh in Noney through a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, reinforcing the force’s deep-rooted traditions of honour and sacrifice.
Efforts to build stronger civil-military relations are also evident through initiatives like “A Day with Company Commander,” which allows students and civilians to interact with soldiers, understand military life, and imbibe values of discipline, leadership, and patriotism.

The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, operates under the operational control of the Indian Army and plays a critical role in maintaining peace and security across the Northeast. Commandants like Colonel Karan Sandhu, often deputed from the Army, are entrusted with leading units in some of the most challenging terrains and socio-political environments in the country.

Colonel Sandhu’s tenure with 19 Assam Rifles reflects the modern face of military leadership—one that blends firmness with empathy. His initiatives demonstrate how sustained engagement, trust-building, and development-oriented actions can complement security operations to achieve lasting stability. In regions like Manipur, such leadership continues to make a tangible difference, reinforcing the idea that true security goes hand in hand with inclusive growth and community partnership.
