At just 32 years of age, Naik Arvind Kumar represented the finest traditions of the Indian Army — fearlessness under fire, loyalty to comrades, and service before self. His martyrdom, alongside four fellow Para SF commandos, reminded the nation of the immense sacrifices made daily by India’s Special Forces personnel in protecting national security.

Early Life and Roots in Himachal Pradesh

Naik Arvind Kumar hailed from Suri village in the Marhun area of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh — a state known for producing brave soldiers who have served the nation across generations. Born around 1991, he grew up in a humble family deeply connected to traditional values, discipline, and patriotism.

He was the youngest of three siblings and the son of Shri Ujjwal Singh, a retired employee of the Public Works Department, and Smt Nirmala Devi. From an early age, Arvind displayed a strong interest in physical fitness, athletics, and military life. Like many young men from the hill regions of Himachal Pradesh, he dreamt of wearing the olive green uniform and serving the country.

After completing his early education in the village and nearby areas, he focused on preparing for recruitment into the armed forces. His determination and discipline eventually helped him achieve his dream when he joined the Indian Army in 2012.

Despite his demanding military career, Arvind Kumar remained closely attached to his family and village roots. He married Smt Bindu Devi, and the couple had two daughters, Shanvi and Shanvika. Friends and relatives remember him as a caring son, a devoted husband, and a proud father who balanced family responsibilities with the extreme demands of Special Forces service.

Joining the Elite 9 Para Special Forces

After entering the Indian Army, Arvind Kumar was selected for The Parachute Regiment, one of the most elite fighting forces of the Indian military. He later became part of the renowned 9 Para (Special Forces), a unit known for conducting high-risk operations including counter-terrorism missions, special reconnaissance, hostage rescue, and unconventional warfare.

Selection into the Para Special Forces is considered among the toughest military processes in the world. Only a small percentage of volunteers successfully complete the brutal probation and training process. Physical endurance, mental toughness, combat skills, and psychological resilience are tested to the extreme.

Arvind Kumar successfully earned the coveted maroon beret and Balidan badge, symbols of exceptional sacrifice and elite military capability.

Over the next eleven years, he participated in numerous operations in difficult environments, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. His professionalism, combat skills, and operational experience earned him respect within the unit. Through dedication and consistent performance, he rose to the rank of Naik.

Service with the National Security Guard

One of the most notable phases of his military career was his deputation with the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the National Security Guard (NSG), India’s premier counter-terrorism force often referred to as the “Black Cats.”

The NSG is tasked with handling some of the country’s most sensitive and dangerous missions, including counter-hijack operations, urban warfare, and anti-terror interventions. Being selected for NSG duty itself reflects a soldier’s operational excellence and professional competence.

During his tenure with 51 SAG, Naik Arvind Kumar earned recognition as an exceptional operator. Reports and tributes from fellow soldiers indicate that he received the prestigious “Top Men” badge, highlighting his outstanding performance and combat proficiency.

He also underwent advanced training courses, including air assault and specialised tactical qualifications. His military profile reflected the hallmarks of a highly trained Special Forces operator capable of functioning in complex and hostile situations.

Excellence Beyond the Battlefield

Apart from his military achievements, Naik Arvind Kumar was also an accomplished athlete and marksman. Representing the Indian Army in national and international competitions, he won medals in athletics and shooting events conducted in countries such as Germany and Singapore.

His sporting achievements reflected the intense physical conditioning and discipline required in Special Forces units. Fellow soldiers described him as someone who constantly pushed himself to improve, both physically and professionally.

This combination of combat excellence, athletic ability, and humble character made him widely admired among peers and seniors alike.

The Rajouri Counter-Terrorism Operation

In early May 2023, security forces intensified anti-terror operations in the Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir following intelligence inputs regarding the movement of heavily armed terrorists in the Kandi Forest area.

The terrorists were believed to be linked to the deadly Poonch ambush of 20 April 2023, in which five Indian Army personnel had lost their lives after militants attacked an Army vehicle.

Given the seriousness of the threat, Special Forces teams from 9 Para (SF) were deployed for the operation. The dense forests, rocky terrain, steep cliffs, and cave systems of the Pir Panjal region made the mission extremely challenging.

The operation began on 3 May 2023 and involved coordinated action using drones, surveillance assets, sniffer dogs, and ground assault teams.

On the morning of 5 May 2023, security forces established contact with terrorists hiding inside a fortified cave structure deep within the forest. As troops moved closer, the terrorists opened heavy fire, triggering a fierce gun battle.

Naik Arvind Kumar was among the assault team members leading the operation.

The Supreme Sacrifice

During the intense close-quarters engagement, the Special Forces personnel launched aggressive action to neutralise the terrorists. Mortars and grenades were used to suppress the enemy position.

However, during the firefight, the terrorists detonated an explosive device inside the cave, causing a massive blast. The explosion resulted in severe injuries to several soldiers engaged in the assault.

Naik Arvind Kumar sustained critical injuries during the operation and later succumbed while fighting for the nation.

Alongside him, four other brave soldiers of 9 Para (SF) also attained martyrdom:

  • Havildar Neelam Singh
  • Lance Naik Ruchin Singh Rawat
  • Paratrooper Siddhant Chettri
  • Paratrooper Pramod Negi

Several other personnel, including a Special Forces officer, were seriously injured and evacuated for treatment.

The operation continued in the following days as security forces intensified efforts to eliminate the terrorist group operating in the area.

The sacrifice of Naik Arvind Kumar and his comrades highlighted the extreme dangers faced by India’s Special Forces personnel during counter-terrorism missions in Jammu and Kashmir.

Nation Honours a Braveheart

Following his martyrdom, Naik Arvind Kumar’s mortal remains were brought to his native village in Himachal Pradesh on 6 May 2023. Thousands gathered to pay tribute to the fallen soldier.

On 7 May, he was cremated with full military honours in his village. Emotional scenes unfolded as soldiers presented the Tricolour to his wife, while chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Naik Arvind Kumar Amar Rahe” echoed through the area.

The Himachal Pradesh government announced financial assistance for the family, including ex-gratia relief and a government job for his widow. The Government Senior Secondary School in Marhun was also renamed in his honour as a lasting tribute to his sacrifice.

Political leaders, military veterans, and citizens across the country expressed deep respect for the brave Para commando who gave his life while defending the nation.

Posthumous Recognition

In January 2024, Naik Arvind Kumar was posthumously awarded the Mention-in-Despatches for his courage, devotion to duty, and exceptional service during counter-terrorism operations.

His name was also included in the Roll of Honour at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, ensuring that future generations remember his sacrifice and contribution to the nation.

Within defence circles, he continues to be remembered as a fearless operator, a disciplined soldier, and a true Special Forces warrior.

Legacy of Courage and Service

Naik Arvind Kumar’s journey from a small village in Himachal Pradesh to the elite ranks of India’s Special Forces is a story of determination, sacrifice, and patriotism.

He represented a generation of Indian soldiers who quietly undertake dangerous missions in some of the country’s most hostile environments, often without recognition or public attention. His life reflected the spirit of the Para Special Forces motto — “Men Apart, Every Man an Emperor.”

Today, his story continues to inspire young Indians who dream of serving in the armed forces. His sacrifice reminds the nation that the freedom and security enjoyed by millions are protected by brave soldiers willing to put their lives on the line.

Naik Arvind Kumar may no longer be physically present, but his courage, legacy, and devotion to India will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory.
