Nagpur/New Delhi, May 26, 2026 — Shri Satyanarayan Nandlal Nuwal, Founder and Chairman of Solar Industries India Limited (Solar Group), has been conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and industrial advancement.
The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Union Government had announced the Padma awards for 2026 on the eve of Republic Day, with Shri Nuwal named among 113 recipients of the Padma Shri in the field of Trade and Industry.
A Legacy of Indigenous Defence Innovation
Under Shri Nuwal’s leadership, the Nagpur-based Solar Group has emerged as a premier indigenous defence manufacturer. The company specialises in ammunition, rockets, loitering munitions, anti-drone systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Its flagship product, the Nagastra loitering munition — India’s first indigenously developed system of its kind — has been successfully deployed by the Indian Army, including during Operation Sindoor. Advanced variants, Nagastra-2 and Nagastra-3, are in advanced stages of development, alongside systems such as Bhargavastra, a hard-kill anti-drone solution based on micro-missiles.
The Group’s expanded portfolio encompasses landmines, warheads, missiles, universal air-bombs, and weaponised drones, significantly strengthening India’s self-reliance in critical defence technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Personal Journey and Vision
Born in a modest village in Rajasthan, Shri Nuwal moved to Maharashtra and built his enterprise from humble beginnings. He established his first venture — an ink manufacturing unit — at the age of 18 in 1970. In 1995, he founded Solar Industries, initially focusing on industrial explosives before pivoting to high-technology defence manufacturing. Despite early hardships, including periods of financial struggle, he transformed the company into a globally respected enterprise and a key pillar of India’s defence industrial base.
Shri Nuwal also serves as Chairman of the Shri Ramdeobaba Sarvajanik Samiti, which oversees Ramdeobaba University in Nagpur, reflecting his commitment to education and nation-building alongside industrial growth.
Reaction to the Honour
Expressing deep gratitude upon the conferment, Shri Nuwal stated that the recognition was “a matter of pride and honour” that would encourage him to contribute further to the country. “It will be my moral duty to see what more I can do for the nation,” he remarked, dedicating the award to his team and the broader Solar family.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has previously commended the Group’s capabilities during a visit to its facilities, underscoring the strategic importance of its contributions.

National Significance
The Padma Shri to Shri Nuwal highlights the growing recognition of private-sector leadership in advancing India’s defence self-sufficiency. As a billionaire industrialist listed on Forbes, his journey exemplifies how visionary entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and unwavering commitment to national security can drive transformative progress.
The award adds to the pride of Nagpur and Maharashtra, with business associations, civic leaders, and citizens extending warm congratulations. It serves as an inspiration for entrepreneurs across the country to align enterprise with the larger goal of nation-building.
Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal’s conferment of the Padma Shri stands as a testament to decades of dedication, resilience, and impactful contributions to India’s industrial and defence landscape.
