Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan Takes Charge as Chief of Western Naval Command

Former Vice Chief of the Naval Staff assumes command of the Indian Navy’s premier operational command in Mumbai.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, PVSM, AVSM, NM, assumed charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Western Naval Command during a ceremonial parade held in Mumbai on May 30, 2026.

Prior to this appointment, Vice Admiral Vatsayan served as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi and was responsible for capability development and future readiness initiatives within the Indian Navy.

On assuming command, the Flag Officer paid homage to the nation’s fallen heroes at the Gaurav Stambh memorial located within the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, honouring those who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the country.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988. A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he has served in a wide range of command, operational, training, and staff appointments during a distinguished naval career spanning over three decades.

Throughout his career, the Flag Officer has commanded several frontline naval platforms, including INS Vibhuti, INS Nashak, INS Kuthar and INS Sahyadri. He also commanded Coast Guard Ship C-05 during an earlier phase of his service.

Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the Naval War College and the prestigious National Defence College.

His senior appointments have included Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), Commander of the Eastern Fleet, Deputy Commandant of the National Defence Academy, Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command, and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff for Operations as well as Policy, Plans and Force Development.

During his tenure at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Vatsayan played a significant role in enhancing tri-services coordination, force development, operational integration and policies promoting defence indigenisation.

As Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he oversaw several initiatives related to force modernisation, capability enhancement and future force planning.

A recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nao Sena Medal, Vice Admiral Vatsayan now assumes leadership of the Western Naval Command, the Indian Navy’s principal operational command responsible for safeguarding India’s western maritime front and strategic interests in the Arabian Sea and beyond.

Officials stated that his vast operational experience and strategic expertise will further strengthen the command’s role in ensuring maritime security, operational preparedness and mission readiness in the region.
