In the rolling grounds of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, as the strains of the national anthem filled the air during the 158th Passing Out Parade, a young officer from rural Bihar stood tall with stars on his shoulders. Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary, son of a serving Junior Commissioned Officer and grandson of a retired Subedar, had just been commissioned into the prestigious Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army.
What makes his story particularly inspiring is not just the uniform he now wears, but the journey he chose — walking away from a stable corporate career to answer the call of uniform and national service, thereby extending a proud three-generation military legacy that spans different corps of the Indian Army.
A Legacy Carved Across Three Generations
Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary hails from the quiet village of Singhorwa in the Riga Police Station area of Sitamarhi district, Bihar. He comes from a family where service to the nation is a tradition rather than a choice.
His grandfather, the late Subedar (Retired) Chandeshwar Chaudhary, served with distinction in the Army Medical Corps, tending to the health and well-being of soldiers. His father, Subedar Sanjeev Kumar (also referred to as Sanjeev Chaudhary), continues to serve in the Corps of Signals, ensuring seamless communication on the battlefield and beyond. His mother, Smt. Poonam Chaudhary, has been the quiet pillar of strength holding the family together through years of postings and separations.
Today, Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary carries forward this illustrious legacy — not in the Medical Corps or Signals, but in the Corps of Engineers, where he will contribute to construction, infrastructure, and combat engineering capabilities of the Indian Army. Three generations. Three different corps. One unbroken commitment to the tricolour.
From Corporate Boardrooms to the Battleground of Duty
Before donning the olive green, Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary had built a career in the corporate sector. Like many ambitious young graduates, he had secured a respectable position that offered financial stability and professional growth. Yet, something remained unfulfilled.
The call of the uniform proved stronger than the comfort of corporate life. He made the difficult decision to leave his job and prepare for the rigorous selection process that would eventually lead him to the Indian Military Academy.
In his own words, shared with ETV Bharat after the parade:
“Today, when stars are adorned on my shoulders, this is not just my victory but the victory of the entire family. After years of hard work, sacrifice, and waiting, this day fills me with pride and satisfaction.”
He has spoken about the challenges he faced — the uncertainty, the long preparation, and the emotional weight of leaving a secure career. What sustained him, he said, was an unwavering desire to serve the nation and the quiet but powerful support of his family, trainers, and friends.

The Moment of Commissioning
On the morning of 13 June 2026, at the historic Chatwud Ground of the Indian Military Academy, Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary was one of approximately 515 Gentleman Cadets commissioned as officers in the Indian Army during the 158th Passing Out Parade.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion and patriotism. Families watched with pride as their sons and daughters received their commissions. For the Chaudhary family, the moment carried special significance — a father in uniform stood alongside his son who had just earned his own stars, while the mother looked on with tears of joy.
Photographs from the event capture the essence of this milestone. In one image, Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary stands in his full uniform — peaked cap with distinctive insignia, shoulder stars gleaming, and a ceremonial sword in hand — against the backdrop of the IMA grounds. In another, he poses proudly with his parents: his father, Subedar Sanjeev, resplendent in his own uniform with medal ribbons, and his mother in traditional attire. The image of three generations connected through military service is both powerful and deeply moving.
Pride of Sitamarhi and Inspiration for Bihar’s Youth
News of Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary’s commissioning has spread rapidly across Sitamarhi and Bihar. Local media outlets, including Dainik Jagran and ETV Bharat, have highlighted his achievement as a matter of immense local pride.
Former soldiers and community leaders in the district have expressed hope that his success will inspire countless young men and women from rural Bihar to consider careers in the armed forces. In a region where opportunities can sometimes feel limited, stories like his serve as powerful reminders that dedication, discipline, and a dream can overcome any obstacle.
His journey — from a village in Sitamarhi to the parade ground of the Indian Military Academy — embodies the values the Indian Army holds dear: service before self, courage, and perseverance.
A New Chapter Begins
As Lieutenant Saurav Chaudhary begins his career in the Corps of Engineers, he carries with him not only the expectations of his family but also the hopes of an entire district. The challenges ahead will be many — technical training, field postings, and the demands of military life — but he steps forward with the quiet confidence of someone who has already made the hardest choice: to follow his calling.
His story is more than a personal achievement. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of military service in India, where family legacies often become national legacies, and where young professionals continue to trade comfort for commitment.
