Colonel Krishan Singh Rawat

In the world of India’s elite Special Forces, where missions are often classified and recognition is rare, only a handful of officers become publicly known for their exceptional courage and leadership. Colonel Krishan Singh Rawat, Shaurya Chakra (SC), Sena Medal (SM), of the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), popularly known as 1 PARA (SF), is one such officer. His distinguished military career spans years of counter-terrorism operations, high-risk missions along the Line of Control (LoC), and command of one of the Indian Army’s most battle-hardened Special Forces battalions.

Born on 25 March 1985 in Bhikyasain, Uttarakhand, Colonel Rawat spent much of his early life in Delhi, where he studied at Green Fields School and Navyug School, Sarojini Nagar. Coming from a family associated with the defence establishment, he was inspired by a disciplined environment from an early age. His father served as Personal Secretary to the Integrated Financial Advisor at the Integrated Defence Headquarters before retirement. Choosing the profession of arms, Rawat was commissioned into the Indian Army and volunteered for the elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), a path known for its demanding selection standards and physically punishing training.

The journey of a Para Special Forces officer is among the toughest in the military. Personnel undergo extensive training in airborne operations, free-fall parachuting, mountain warfare, combat diving, unconventional warfare, and small-team tactics. Colonel Rawat distinguished himself early in his career, earning the Sena Medal for Gallantry in 2010 while serving as a Major. He was also Mentioned in Despatches, reflecting his consistently outstanding operational performance during deployments. These recognitions established him as a capable Special Forces officer long before his most celebrated operation.

Over the years, Colonel Rawat acquired several prestigious military qualifications. Publicly available photographs show him wearing the US Army Ranger Tab, Combat Diver Badge, US Paratrooper Wings, and Indian Army parachute and free-fall qualifications. These badges represent advanced military training rarely achieved by officers and highlight the international exposure and professional excellence expected from select Para SF personnel.

The defining chapter of his career came in late December 2019 during a counter-infiltration mission along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Then serving as a Lieutenant Colonel, he led a mission-oriented Special Forces team tasked with preventing terrorist infiltration. Acting on intelligence inputs, his team established an ambush along a likely infiltration route and remained concealed for 36 hours in extremely harsh weather conditions close to the LoC. The operation demanded extraordinary endurance, patience, and tactical discipline before the terrorists finally appeared.

When contact was established, Colonel Rawat displayed remarkable battlefield leadership. He manoeuvred his team into a favourable flanking position and directed one of his squad commanders to crawl forward under enemy fire, leading to the elimination of two terrorists. As the encounter intensified, he repositioned his team to maintain tactical superiority. During the final phase of the operation, he personally closed in on the remaining terrorists at extremely close range, eliminating two more and seriously injuring another militant. His calm decision-making and personal courage ensured the success of the mission while preventing infiltration across the LoC.

For his conspicuous bravery and exemplary leadership during the operation, Colonel Rawat was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. The honour was announced in August 2020 and formally presented by President Ram Nath Kovind during the Defence Investiture Ceremony in November 2021. The citation praised his resolute leadership and gallantry under intense enemy fire, making the operation one of the most notable Special Forces actions publicly acknowledged in recent years.

Following his operational achievements, Colonel Rawat rose to command 1 PARA (Special Forces), one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated Special Forces battalions. As Commanding Officer, he continued to uphold the regiment’s deeply rooted ethos of leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to every soldier. One publicly reported example came after the martyrdom of Lance Naik Praveen Sharma during an anti-terror operation in Kokernag, when Colonel Rawat personally ensured that the soldier’s mortal remains were escorted to his native village, reflecting the tradition that Special Forces commanders remain responsible for their men both in battle and beyond.

Throughout his career, Colonel Rawat has demonstrated that success in Special Forces is built through years of consistent operational excellence rather than a single act of heroism. From receiving the Sena Medal early in his career to later earning the Shaurya Chakra, his journey illustrates the importance of perseverance, tactical competence, and decisive leadership. His international military qualifications, battlefield achievements, and command responsibilities have made him one of the most respected officers associated with the Indian Army’s Special Forces community.
