Fr Joseph CC, Vice-Chancellor of Christ (Deemed to be) University, has been conferred the honorary rank of Colonel by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) at a formal pipping ceremony held at the university’s central campus in Bengaluru.
Fr Joseph is among two individuals from Karnataka to receive the honorary NCC rank. The recognition comes in acknowledgement of his leadership and the university’s longstanding association with the NCC and its contribution to youth development, discipline and nation-building.
Christ University has maintained a strong association with the NCC for 57 years, with its 2/9 Company established in 1969. Over the decades, the institution’s NCC programme has provided students with opportunities to develop leadership, discipline, teamwork and a sense of responsibility towards the nation.
The university has also contributed significantly to the armed forces through its NCC programme. Around 200 Christ cadets have gone on to receive commissions in the armed forces, including 47 cadets between 2019 and 2026. At present, 21 former Christ NCC cadets are undergoing training at various military academies.
The institution’s sustained commitment to NCC activities has also received recognition from the Karnataka and Goa Directorate. Christ University has been awarded the Directorate’s Best Institution award for eight consecutive years, reflecting its continued performance and contribution to the NCC programme.
Speaking after the conferment of the honorary rank, Fr Joseph described the NCC uniform as a symbol of responsibility, tradition and commitment to the values associated with the organisation. He highlighted the importance of carrying these values forward through service and responsible leadership.
The ceremony also acknowledged Christ University alumni who are currently serving in the armed forces, highlighting the institution’s contribution to India’s military leadership and national service.
The event further featured the unveiling of Vijai Theran, the annual magazine of the NCC Directorate, marking another highlight of the ceremony.
The conferment of the honorary Colonel rank to the Vice-Chancellor underlined the close relationship between Christ University and the NCC, while recognising the institution’s sustained efforts in nurturing disciplined, motivated and service-oriented youth.
