IAF Issues RFI for High-Power .50 BMG Sniper Rifle for Garud Special Forces

The Indian Air Force has initiated the process to equip its elite Garud Special Forces with a new high-power sniper rifle capable of engaging targets at significantly longer ranges and in an anti-materiel role. The service has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for a rifle chambered in the powerful 12.7x99mm (.50 BMG) cartridge.

Key Requirements of the New Rifle

The proposed weapon is intended to replace the Galil sniper rifles currently in service with the Garuds. The existing Galil has an effective range of approximately 800 metres. A .50 BMG-chambered rifle would nearly double that engagement distance, giving Garud sniper teams a substantial leap in standoff capability.

Beyond extended range against personnel, the heavy .50 BMG round will enable the Garuds to perform anti-materiel tasks. Potential targets include lightly armoured vehicles, radar arrays, communication equipment, and other unarmoured or lightly protected assets.

The RFI specifically seeks a complete system that includes:

  • A sound suppressor for reduced signature during clandestine operations
  • A day telescopic sight
  • A thermal imaging scope for operations in low-light and complete darkness

Thermal sights offer a particular advantage as they detect heat signatures even in conditions where traditional night-vision devices struggle, such as moonless nights under heavy cloud cover.

In addition to standard ammunition, the rifle must be compatible with a range of specialised rounds:

  • Armour-piercing (AP)
  • Armour-piercing incendiary (API)
  • Armour-piercing incendiary tracer (APIT)
  • Armour-piercing explosive incendiary (APEI)
  • Saboted light armour penetrator (SLAP)

These specialised munitions expand the rifle’s utility beyond conventional sniping. The .50 BMG platform is also valued for the safe disposal of unexploded ordnance, allowing Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to neutralise devices from a safer distance.

Role of the Garud Special Forces

Raised in 2004 primarily to protect Indian Air Force bases and installations against terrorist attacks, the Garud Commando Force has evolved into a multi-role special operations unit. Its responsibilities now include counter-insurgency operations, combat search and rescue (CSAR), special reconnaissance, and other high-risk missions both within and beyond Indian territory.

Equipping the force with a long-range, high-power anti-materiel sniper capability will enhance its ability to operate independently deep behind enemy lines or in contested environments, particularly in scenarios requiring precision engagement of high-value equipment or infrastructure.

Part of Broader Capability Enhancement

The sniper rifle RFI comes alongside other recent efforts by the IAF to modernise Garud equipment. In recent months, the service has also sought man-portable loitering munitions (with a minimum range of 40 km and dual warhead options) and high-altitude micro UAV systems optimised for surveillance in extreme environments. These parallel procurements indicate a systematic push to give the Garuds greater independent long-range strike, reconnaissance, and precision engagement options.

No specific quantity or procurement timeline has been publicly detailed in the current RFI. As with all such processes, responses from manufacturers will be evaluated before the IAF moves to the next stage of the acquisition cycle under the Defence Acquisition Procedure.

Operational Significance

The induction of a .50 BMG sniper system would place Garud teams among the relatively small number of Indian special forces units equipped with true anti-materiel rifles. The combination of extended range, specialised ammunition, and advanced day/night optics will significantly expand the force’s tactical options in both conventional and unconventional warfare scenarios.

For defence aspirants and observers, the development underscores the Indian Air Force’s continued focus on strengthening the capabilities of its special operations element in line with evolving operational requirements.
