IAF Woman Fighter Pilot Flew Su-30MKI in Strike on Lashkar Headquarters in Muridke During Operation Sindoor

A female Indian Air Force Flight Lieutenant was among the pilots who struck the Markaz Taiba headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke, Pakistan, during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, according to defence and security sources. She flew a Sukhoi Su-30MKI as part of the primary strike package that targeted the major training and indoctrination centre long associated with Hafiz Saeed.

The revelation has drawn fresh attention to the combat roles played by women fighter pilots in the 87-to-88-hour conflict. It follows the recent release of Discovery Channel’s two-part docu-series Declassified: Operation Sindoor, which features a woman officer whose identity is concealed.

The Mission and the Aircraft

Sources confirmed that the woman Flight Lieutenant was part of the IAF package that hit the LeT headquarters at Markaz Taiba in Muridke. The Su-30MKI she flew is a twin-engine, multi-role air-superiority fighter capable of delivering long-range stand-off munitions, including the BrahMos and Rampage air-to-ground missiles used during the operation. Specific weapon details for individual sorties remain classified.

She was not an isolated case. Multiple women combat pilots flew both Su-30MKIs and Rafales during the intense fighting. In some missions they served as pilots; in others they operated as Weapon System Operators (WSOs). Once officers enter the fighter stream, sources emphasised, they are treated purely as fighter pilots with identical training and operational responsibilities, regardless of gender.

On the opening night of the operation, Indian forces struck nine designated terrorist training camps and headquarters across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The IAF specifically targeted two high-value sites deep inside Pakistani territory: the LeT headquarters in Muridke and the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur. The remaining locations were engaged by the Indian Army with loitering munitions and long-range artillery.

In keeping with standard operational security practices, the identities of the women pilots who participated in the active strike packages have not been disclosed.

Operation Sindoor: Context and Scope

Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Armed Forces in the early hours of 7 May 2025 as a precision counter-terrorism response to the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. In that attack, militants from The Resistance Front (widely regarded as an LeT proxy) killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists, after separating them on religious lines in Baisaran Valley.

The operation’s stated aim was the destruction of terrorist infrastructure used to plan and support cross-border attacks. India described the initial strikes as focused, measured and non-escalatory, targeting only terror camps and avoiding Pakistani military installations. The conflict subsequently intensified over several days, involving further exchanges before a ceasefire arrangement took hold around 10 May 2025, resulting in an overall duration of roughly 87–88 hours.

Markaz Taiba in Muridke had long been identified as a key LeT hub for recruitment, indoctrination and training. Historical links include training associated with the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Its targeting, alongside the JeM facility in Bahawalpur, represented one of the deepest strikes into Pakistani Punjab since 1971.

Women in the Fighter Stream and Broader Significance

The participation of women pilots in frontline strike packages builds on the IAF’s progressive induction of women into the fighter stream, which began in 2015–16. Today, women officers fly a range of platforms including the Su-30MKI, Rafale, MiG-29 and Tejas. Their operational integration during a high-intensity, short-duration conflict underscores that combat roles are assigned on capability rather than gender once the rigorous fighter conversion is complete.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier publicly acknowledged the instrumental role of women pilots and personnel during Operation Sindoor, describing it as a demonstration of Nari Shakti. The latest details move beyond the highly visible public briefing delivered on 7 May 2025 by Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (Army) and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (IAF helicopter pilot) to confirm direct combat flying involvement.

The Discovery Channel series Declassified: Operation Sindoor, which premiered around India’s Independence Day 2026, provides first-hand accounts from military leadership, operational commanders and personnel involved in the planning and execution of the campaign. Its depiction of a woman officer (identity protected) aligns with the independent reporting on female pilots in the strike packages.

Implications

The confirmed combat role of women fighter pilots in Operation Sindoor marks a significant milestone in the operational maturity of India’s mixed-gender fighter force. It demonstrates that the IAF’s decade-long effort to open the fighter stream has translated into real-world high-stakes missions against designated terrorist targets. For defence aspirants and the wider public, it reinforces that professional competence, training standards and mission readiness determine assignment to critical packages.

Identities of the pilots involved remain protected for operational security reasons. Further official details on individual contributions or specific munitions are unlikely to be released in the near term.

This account is based primarily on reporting from defence and security sources as published by ThePrint and corroborated by subsequent coverage. All operational specifics beyond what has been publicly confirmed remain classified.
