Jammu, October 21: The wife of a serving Indian Army Major is under investigation for alleged espionage-related activities after she was intercepted at Jammu Tawi Railway Station and booked for reportedly writing analytical papers on sensitive defence and geopolitical subjects for individuals linked to foreign intelligence agencies, including those suspected to have China connections. She has told investigators that she received approximately ₹5 lakh in total payments at the rate of about $200 per article.
A joint team comprising personnel from the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and a central intelligence agency intercepted the woman, a native of Telangana, on October 14, 2026, at Jammu Tawi Railway Station. She was travelling with her mother and child and was reportedly preparing to board a train to Pathankot. She was taken to a nearby military station for questioning, and her mobile phone was seized for forensic examination. An FIR (No. 290/2026) was subsequently registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu under relevant provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923 (including Sections concerning spying and unauthorised handling of protected information), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Sections 152 and 61(2), relating to acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India and criminal conspiracy). A Deputy Superintendent of Police is leading the probe.
According to sources, the woman came into contact in 2024 through social media with a Malaysian national who was running a consultancy allegedly working for Chinese intelligence agencies. She was reportedly tasked with preparing analytical papers on topics including Line of Control (LoC) dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir, critical infrastructure projects in Arunachal Pradesh (such as the Kalai-II Hydroelectric and Kamala projects), drone deployment, and other defence and geopolitical issues.
Some reports indicate the initial assignments focused on environmental and general geopolitical subjects before shifting towards defence-related matters. Investigators have also noted earlier contacts, including with a Chinese national during an internship, maintained via WhatsApp, as well as approaches during an overseas study trip that included Switzerland.
The woman holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from a Bengaluru-based university (2021) and a Master of Advanced Studies in European and International Governance from Geneva (2022). She married the Army Major in October 2023. She has worked as a freelance researcher, completed a United Nations internship in 2023, and undertook an online internship with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) in New Delhi, during which she authored research articles.
During questioning, she has maintained that her writings were based entirely on open-source information, supplemented by AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, and Google searches. Preliminary examination of her seized device has revealed documents on subjects including the India-Italy defence meeting at the Manekshaw Centre, the Indian Army Chief’s visit to the United States, the India-Russia defence pact, the Cold Start doctrine, India-China relations, projects in Assam, and India-Seychelles ties.
Sources have indicated that nothing incriminating has been found in the writings so far, and preliminary assessments have not established that classified or sensitive information was shared. Investigators are examining financial transactions, digital records, and whether any information was obtained directly or through her husband’s posting.
Reports differ slightly on the husband’s location: one account places him with the 9 Corps intelligence unit in Pathankot, while another states he was not deployed in the Jammu region. The woman has not been arrested and is reported to be cooperating with the investigation. Agencies continue to scrutinise possible links to foreign handlers, the nature of the payments, and the full extent of any information shared through encrypted channels. The case remains under active investigation.
