New Delhi, November 1, 2026: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjay Singhal formally assumed charge as the Director General (DG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on November 1, 2026, marking a new chapter in the leadership of the central armed police force responsible for guarding India’s strategically important border with China.
Upon assuming office at the ITBP Force Headquarters in New Delhi, Sanjay Singhal received a ceremonial Guard of Honour. He took the salute and inspected the ceremonial guard as part of the formal assumption of his new responsibilities.
The ceremony was attended by Sanjay Gunjyal, IPS, Additional Director General (Headquarters), along with other senior officers of the force, who welcomed the new Director General.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is one of India’s premier Central Armed Police Forces operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Established on October 24, 1962, following the India-China War, the force is primarily responsible for guarding the India-China border, stretching approximately 3,488 kilometres from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.
ITBP personnel are deployed in some of the world’s most challenging terrains, including high-altitude Himalayan regions where temperatures frequently drop below freezing. The force plays a crucial role in border security, surveillance, disaster response, rescue operations and maintaining security in strategically sensitive areas.
As Director General, Sanjay Singhal will be responsible for overseeing the force’s operational preparedness, border management, personnel welfare, training and administrative functioning.

His appointment comes at a time when strengthening border infrastructure, enhancing surveillance capabilities and ensuring the operational readiness of security forces deployed along India’s northern frontiers remain key national security priorities.

The assumption of charge by Sanjay Singhal marks an important leadership transition for the ITBP as the force continues its mission of safeguarding India’s borders under its motto, “Shaurya, Dridhata, Karm Nishtha” (Valour, Determination, Devotion to Duty).
