A 33-year-old Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan posted at the Khanua Border Outpost along the India-Nepal border in Maharajganj district, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide in the early hours of Saturday night (November 8, 2026). He shot himself in the chest with his service rifle.
Manjeet Kumar, a resident of Jamhor village in Aurangabad district, Bihar, was serving with the 66th Battalion of the SSB. He had joined the force on June 23, 2014. According to updated reports, he was scheduled for duty from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. He collected his service rifle before proceeding to his post but failed to report. When the duty commander found him missing around 2 a.m., a search was initiated. He was later discovered dead beneath a staircase inside the camp, with the rifle beside him.
Kumar had returned to duty from leave approximately five days earlier (around October 3). Colleagues and reports indicate he had been under mental distress since then. His elder brother had died around two-and-a-half months ago. He had married two years earlier and is survived by a two-and-a-half-month-old son. His father, Suresh Ram, is deceased; his mother is Nagina Devi. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister.
Police and senior SSB officers reached the spot promptly. The Station House Officer of Sonauli and the Circle Officer of Nautanwa attended the scene, and a forensic team collected evidence. The family was informed of the death. An investigation is underway, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
The incident has been reported across multiple outlets, including Bhaskar English, with consistent core details regarding the identity of the jawan, the location, the use of the service rifle, and the recent family bereavement.
This is a developing story based on reports available as of November 8, 2026. Official confirmation of the precise circumstances remains with the investigating agencies.
