Among the 491 cadets commissioned into the Indian Army from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, on Saturday was 24-year-old Gyaneshwor Singh from Manipur, who created history by becoming the first Army officer from his village.

Hailing from Okram village in Thoubal district, Lieutenant Gyaneshwor Singhโ€™s commissioning marked a proud and emotional moment for his family and the entire village. He was joined at the Passing Out Parade by his parents and younger sister, who watched with pride as he began his journey as an Indian Army officer.

Training Amid Manipur Violence

Gyaneshworโ€™s path to commissioning was marked by extraordinary challenges. Ethnic violence erupted in Manipur while he was undergoing training at the National Defence Academy (NDA)โ€”a situation that continues to remain tense.

Thoubal district lies close to Churachandpur and Bishnupur, areas frequently affected by clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Being far from home, Gyaneshwor constantly worried about the safety of his family during the unrest.

โ€œAt the NDA, we are allowed to speak to our families only once a week and that too after prior permission. When the violence broke out, it was extremely difficult for me. I was deeply concerned about my familyโ€™s safety,โ€ he recalled.

Support from Officers and Batchmates

Gyaneshwor said the support he received from the NDA faculty and fellow cadets helped him stay focused during the crisis.

โ€œThe officers, especially those from Assam, went out of their way to check on my family through fellow officers posted in Manipur. My batchmates stood by me and encouraged me throughout. Their support helped me continue my training,โ€ he said, emotionally wiping tears from his motherโ€™s face.

Familyโ€™s Pride and Village Inspiration

His father, Okram Biramani Singh, a school teacher, recalled the tense days at home.

โ€œAlthough our village remained safe, nearby villages were affected. We knew our son was anxious, so we kept reminding him to concentrate on his training. Today, he is the pride of our village. Youngsters now see him as an inspiration to serve the nation,โ€ he said.

Gyaneshworโ€™s mother Mihenbi Devi and younger sister Gyaneshwori said the moment was beyond words.

โ€œHe was inspired by his seniors at Sainik School to join the Army. After he joined the NDA, many youngsters from the village started seeking his guidance. Now, we hope more youth will follow his path and serve the country,โ€ they said.

A Symbol of Hope and Determination

Lieutenant Gyaneshwor Singhโ€™s journeyโ€”from training during ethnic violence to commissioning at IMAโ€”stands as a powerful story of resilience, discipline, and national service, offering hope and motivation to youth from conflict-affected regions across India.
